Shrinking penis after surgery and radiation

Posted by jeanadair123 @jeanadair123, Oct 13, 2020

My husband had his prostrate removed by surgery in 2003, in 2011 his PSA was high so he had 38 treatments of radiation. Slowly his penis has shrunk to the point that he said it is getting difficult to pee standing up. Is this a side effect of the surgery/radiation and is there anything that can help? Thank you.

Thanks for posting the Mayo Clinic YouTube video for the Penile Traction Device. Additional info from the page - "Landon Trost, M.D., provides background information as to why a new penile traction technology was developed by Mayo Clinic and licensed to PathRight Medical (https://www.restorex.com/). Common problems with existing technology included painful or ineffective clamps, lack of sufficient traction, inability to get feedback on the amount of traction required, need for extended use (greater than 5-9 hours daily), and a lack of ability to provide counter-bending forces. Hi @windseaker, welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. The Penile Traction Therapy Device was developed with Mayo Clinic. However, Dr. Trost is no longer at Mayo Clinic.
There is no need to apply for a clinical trial as the device is FDA approved and available for purchase. You can learn more about it here: https://www.restorex.com/

exercising has helped me

Prostate surgery can cause the side effect of penis shrinkage. Your exercises weren’t the reason your penis increased in size. It should return to the size it was on its own.
The penis has a couple cylinder-shaped chambers that fill with blood which causes an erection. No muscles in it.
Take care,
Jake

Hey Jake, you're right that after prostate removal penile shortening often reverses on its own within 6 to 12 months.

@songwriterdanny, kudos on using exercising during your recovery and for your health. Experts aren’t sure why the penis shortens after prostatectomy. One possible cause is abnormal muscle contractions in a man’s groin that pull the penis farther into their body. Perhaps exercising has helped release groin muscle contraction. I couldn't say. But what I do know is that exercise is good for you. What type of activity to like the best?

I had shrinkage after surgery, more after radiation, and the biggest occurred after Lupron injections. I was circumsized
as a baby. My penis has shrunk back int skin and looks like I was not. This causes problems when I get a strong urge to urinate and I have trouble getting a hold of anything. Thus, pee goes everywhere.

I haven’t been able to have erection since 20 treatments a year ago. I have tried highest dose of cialis but nothing. Any thoughts??

@rcs
I tried all the oral medications too with no results.
An acquaintance of mine suggested I try an injectable medication called trimix that works well for him. The thought of injecting my penis sounded painful but was pleasantly surprised when I barely felt it. The next time I used it I didn’t feel the injection at all.
The only problem is it has to be prepared at a sterile compounding pharmacy which makes them expensive and are not usually covered by insurance.

@colleenyoung
Please correct me if I'm mistaken but the stretching device you referred to last year, I thought any length gained was as a result of straightening any curvature that may exist from Peyronie’s Disease or another condition.
If any length is gained I don't believe is long lasting.
Good luck @rcs,
Jake
