Vocal Injection After care exercises?

Posted by newlife @nevermind321369, Oct 11, 2020

Hi so i recently finally got vocal injections after almost 4 years of voice loss (i made a post from another account a couple of months ago) and it’s been 5 days and my voice is slowly getting better but i was wondering if vocal exercises, specifically vocal massaging is gonna be ok to do. Because i dont want to do laryngeal massages and accidentally mess up the injection. Since i did the injection after almost 4 years of voice loss and not immediately after (i went to every doctor ent speech therapist i could find btw), my voice isnt as strong or loud or effortless as before i lost it (it’s better now than before i had the injections though) so i want to do vocal exercises to help make it as best as i can. So if anyone can tell me if i should or shouldnt do the laryngeal massages, that would be helpful. Thank you

Hello @nevermind321369 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect,

As you may know, on Connect, we can only share our experiences, not give medical advice. We are patients like yourself who share our experiences and offer support.

I was intrigued by your post in that I have also had a vocal cord injection prior to vocal cord surgery. I have left-sided vocal cord paralysis, the cause is unknown.

Could you share a bit about the diagnosis of your vocal cord problem? Have you asked your doctor if laryngeal massages are safe after the injection?

Hi she told me to do vocal exercises but i couldnt ask her to specify because after the vocal injections my throat was in so much pain that i couldnt speak so i didnt want to talk alot (mostly because i genuinely couldn’t cuz i felt like someone was choking me) but i wanted to ask people here who have had more experience. The diagnosis was that my vocal chords wouldn’t close completely, there was a gap and im just surprised and annoyed that it took 4 years and so many doctors to realize that. This is really bad but at the beginning of the year, because i was so hopeless and no doctor would listen to me, i got some hyaluronic acid (it was like a face serum) and got some needles and stuck it in my throat and injected it myself. I was just so hopeless. And it did work, obviously my voice was still not good but at least i could speak. I did it two times (two injections in each vocal chord) around 3 months apart. The last time i did it was april. I know what i did was bad and dangerous but i had no other choice. Sorry this is so long

Hello @nevermind321369,

As I mentioned, we cannot give medical advice as each person's experience is so different. I'm glad to hear that you found a doctor who could correctly diagnose your problem Often it does take many visits and second opinions before you find an answer.

I appreciate the extra information that you provided. Before doing any laryngeal massages I would contact the doctor's office and check with them. You can always use the patient portal to ask questions or call and speak to the doctor's nurse or PA.

How long ago was the doctor's injection? Is your voice stronger since that injection?
