Gaining Admission to Mayo Clinic (from out of state)

Does anyone know the ways to get admitted to Mayo Clinic? It seems like it is very difficult (especially when out if state and thousands of miles away). I am trying to gain admission to address a systemic disorder and am told I should ideally have a internal medicine specialist as the quarterback who can bring in specialists and utilize the multi-specialty, integrated, collaborative team approach unique to Mayo Clinic. However when my doctor calls Mayo Clinic internal medicine - what if she fails to get me admitted? (This despite at least 4 of my local doctors who have examined me stating that I meet the criteria of “acute medical necessity”.) I’m told further that if IM denies my admission, I would have to wait 1 whole year to re-apply. This seems ludicrous as I will be either homeless and/or dead in a year. Can anyone shed light on this? Hopefully I will obtain admission but need to know how to get around the 1-year wait period if I should get denied.

@mpflood7, just to clarify a couple of key points so you are not confused coming in to your appointments. Mayo Clinic is a comprehensive care center for a complex diagnosis, however, they will not admit you for diagnostic testing. This is only done on an out patient basis. The only circumstance where they would admit you is if they found something threating that required inpatient intervention. But as @bernese53 mentioned, Mayo is very equipped to get your appointments as close as possible in order to make your stay in Minnesota as fluid as possible and the physicians do speak through your medical record that encompasses all of your medical information, both what your referring physician provided and what each physician you see notates in your chart.

Below I have provided some close accommodations in Rochester that are within walking distance (street level or by the underground walking subway) or a quick ride on the provided shuttles. I wish you the best of luck and feel free to reach out for anymore guidance as you get your appointment scheduled and more information becomes available.

So, if for example, a Mayo Clinic doctor puts a patient on a certain medication, how do they know whether it is the right medication since it will naturally take time to see how the medication works? Is the patient to stay there as an outpatient? Since that could be cost prohibitive (and in my case it would be), and the patient had to return to his home in another state, can the Mayo doctor follow-up with virtual/online visits?

So, if for example, a Mayo Clinic doctor puts a patient on a certain medication, how do they know whether it is the right medication since it will naturally take time to see how the medication works? Is the patient to stay there as an outpatient? Since that could be cost prohibitive (and in my case it would be), and the patient had to return to his home in another state, can the Mayo doctor follow-up with virtual/online visits?

If after your initial visits, you have follow-up questions, Mayo has a Portal that allows you to ask follow up questions. In addition, Mayo has option for virtual visits.

I live in Rochester, and use portal and virtual visits rather then having to go to clinic for follow up questions / visits.

Absolutely. The patient portal is a huge help. You can send messages to your doctors and they will respond to your questions and concerns.
