Tramadol by itself may or may not put me to sleep. I usually take it after trying the gabapentin for pain so it seems to be the combination of the two that knocks me out. It does relieve the pain and that is often what keeps me awake as I try to put off taking the tramadol just because I dislike using an opioid.
