Results of CT Scan

Posted by alamogal635 @alamogal635, Sep 22, 2020

Heard from my PCP. No signs of cancer in my right, or left lung. I'll know a little more from the oncologist tomorrow. There seens to be a spot fo some sort on my left lower lung that she says the radiologist thinks is mucus. I've never heard of that, but radiologist suggests regular CT scans to make certain it is what he thinks it is. Has anyone heard of mucus leaving a spot, or sign in/on one's lungs? At least continue to be cancer free. Than you all for hearing me out.

Just talked with oncologist. No caner as I knew and he isnot concerned at all about the nodule. He is almost certain there is not cancer connected to it. He thinks it is mucus trapped in the airway to the lung--no really in the lung and will resolve itself. Yes, I am at peace. Will have an ealier CT scan in January to see that all is well. My appointment was by phone.

I have a question about your post I had a CT scan last week and the lung Dr said it looks like a small spot on the top of my lung about the size of 1/2 of the small fingernail, of course that happened on a Friday when I got the news, she is sending me for a PET scan, of course I am not scared to death, not sleeping or earring for 2 days, hoping for a good outcome on the PET scan, but am a nervous wreck, I do have COPD so I guess I will just have to wait and see, the waiting is too nerve wracking

Hello @kathycarpeneti and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I can imagine you are nervous to hear the results. In the meantime, can I clarify if you are looking for feedback from @alamogal635 who posted this discussion originally?

@kathycarpeneti- I'd also like to welcome you to Mayo clinic Connect. There's nothing like the bomb dropped on you when you learn that you have cancer. I remember that sinking horrible feeling well. So I'm right there with you. Did your doctor mean that the spot was in the top part of your lung, or on the top layer of your skin?

I'm a 23 year lung cancer survivor and have had to wait for many CT scans and their results. It's called scanxiety. Here is a link to a discussion about this from other cancer patients so you won't feel so all alone.

Has the date been set for your PET scan? Have you seen the results of your CT scan and the photo of it?

@kathycarpenti If you get another similar message from me that's fine. My computer is acting up. Anyway, it is NORMAL to have this sort of anxiety while waiting for results. People do a lot of fot things to get out of their negative worry. For me I like to lose myself in a good historical fiction book, binge watch a series on TV, and/or play my piano. Anything that distracts your mind for a bit of time is helpful. The worry will be lurking in the back of your mind, but doing something that places you outside yourself is what seems to help. I pray a lot, some folks like meditation, or mindfulness. There were some good posts on this site about mindfulness and meditation.. Anyway, acknowledging the fear is what you need to do and by writing here you are doing so. I have been throught his and each time have felt that anticipatory fear of "what if." It is normal in our states. Also, this site is wonderful for just getting feeling out in the open and know that no one will not understand. Had I not ofundt his site, I don't know what I would have done. Anyway, know I am praying for and thinking of you. Please let us know what you find out.

@alamogal635- Hello my friend. I just want to see how you are doing. Is it sunny where you are so that you can enjoy a bit of outside or is it too hot already? I had my vaccines and am raring for a family birthday party at the end of the month. I miss reading your great comments and support here.

@alamogal635 - Please don't be afraid, this can be something exactly what your doctor said it was. There is a downside to all of our wonderful technologies and that is you get the bad with the good. When I say bad I mean CT scans pick up all sorts of things. After my first operation, it picked up a shadow and I thought that I had another tumor. I was panicked. Since then my CT scans have picked up bits of clustered pneumonia cells, different things that I have asperated like phlegm. "Pulmonary aspiration is a condition that occurs when a person inhales a foreign substance into their windpipe and lungs. It often happens when something a person is eating or drinking goes down the wrong way. Or, it can occur when someone breathes in: water, such as when swimming or playing in a pool or river" (Medical News, 2019).

Your body will absorb it. I was very surprised when I learned this. A little while ago, I had, in my lower left lung, 2 lesions that were a concern. One is still being watched and the other was deemed something that I had either aspirated or a bit of an infection. Oh, also lung infections can also show up on CT scans.

Does this make sense?

Have you had a Pet/Ct ?after 5 Keytruda Infusions and this last one Pet/Ct showed No brain cancer no lymph node cancer and the three spots on my lung are gone except one tiny nodule, I will have another Pet/ct the end of July and if that tiny nodule is gone I want to stop Keytruda the Oncologist isn't happy with that idea, but treating something that isn't there doesn't make sense to me . Has anyone stopped Ketruda before the two years??

Hi mdoll. Each case is different, I’ll offer my own perspective that may or may not apply. I am stage IV, and I am fortunate that my cancer is under control through a targeted therapy. There is virtually no evidence of the disease on CT or PET scans. The CTs aren’t perfect, they are very good at showing masses, but they don’t show cancers at a cellular level. My CTs look great, but I know there are still cancer in my body that would have a big party if I stopped my treatment.
Personally, given the opportunity, I would want to make sure that it was really all gone. I wouldn’t want to go through it all over again down the road when it had had a chance to spread.
Take care, your treatment really is your decision. Options are important and having some control of our lives is important too!, best of luck to you, take care! Lisa
