The family of bisphosphonates includes the following drugs:
- Oral: Alendronate (Fosamax), risedronate (Actonel), and ibandronate (Boniva)
- IV: Pamidronate, ibandronate and zoledronic acid (Reclast/Zometa)

@contentandwell is correct that there exists many discussions about osteoporosis treatment in the group, some of them include the drug name in the title. You can browse the topics in the Bones, Joints & Muscles group (https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/arthritis-and-joint-conditions-268850/) or use the search function.

Here's an inventory of relevant, recently active discussions:

- Osteoporosis treatment or strontium citrate? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/osteoporosis-treatment-or-strontium-citrate/

I'd also like to bring @becsbuddy @sue225 @giovi @artscaping @lelia @bonnieh218 @1nan and @parrotqueen into this discussion for a variety of experiences. Weighing the pros and cons is a very individual choice, and only one you can make after talking with your doctor, asking questions and more questions after you do your research.

Sunny, may I ask what diet, exercise or lifestyle adjusts are you making for bone health in addition to considering treatment options?

Hello Colleen, thank you so much for caring about my situation to put for the time and effort to connect me with the right people AKA links.

I think the answers to your questions are in my latest replies two people in the bone joint and muscle osteoporosis to take or not to take or something like that which was a discussion I started.

I don't mean to put you off but am not feeling up to answering just now. I will try to be more precise as soon as I can.

But just know, I have the sweetest, kindest, most patient endocrinologist on the planet! She has gone above and beyond to explain to myself in the husband about all the drugs that I could take and has included pages of information and clinical trials on these options.

I am currently not taking anything but have had three endocrinologist over the years and at least five years ago they began to tell me I need to take an osteoporosis medication because I have already had spontaneous fractures due to so many steroids and so many years on steroids.

Most of my providers, which are mostly specialist and I'm talking a lot of Specialists, tell me I'm a very complicated patient because of all my diseases and conditions. I feel this is a no-win because I am already on to immunosuppressant drugs so taking the in phosphonates would be a third. I was on 3 but had to discontinue my 20 some years of Plaquenil because it cause tissue death in my retina.

I am so grateful for the links and connections you have sent me and can't wait to have a time to begin reading them.

I am very blessed that you have taken your time to help me out because this decision is weighing so heavily on myself and my husband that it's taking a toll for certain which isn't good for my very poor health in so many ways.

I hope you're having a good day and are as acutely aware of the innumerable blessings that surround us, as I am, even in the midst of unrelenting all over pain and the usual fires that we walk through here on this Earth.

Take special care of yourself calling as you are really a special person! Many blessings and peace for your soul, Sunny flower😊

@sunnyflower, My goodness, what a wealth of information you now have on this topic of bones. As you read through these posts there are a couple of things that might help you to put the responses in some kind of order. Probably most important to me now is how long I would have to wait before I can say no to the next dosage of the medication. I am one of those that cannot handle bisphosphonates. I opted for the monthly dosage and regretted it when I had some pretty bad side effects that hung around for a month. That also meant I would not risk medications with long half-lives.

That restriction limited my choices to either Tymlos or Forteo. Next month I will have completed 18 months of Tymlos without any side effects. Essentially, Tymlos and Forteo build bone and the bisphosphonates prevent bone from being lost. The new Evenity may be able to do both. The next thing that might be helpful would do is take a look at the options given your age, activity level, medical issues, and medication profile. This is where your endocrinologist's information and experience will be very helpful

Sharing your decision-making process with loved ones and others can also be very helpful and supportive. As your own advocate, you will make an informed decision.

May you have peace and ease.
Chris

Hello, I 'e been taking New Chapter Bone Strength for many years. It's a plant based calcium which is easier to absorb. It has everything in it that one needs. Vitamins D and K, Strontium, etc..

I do exercise but can't bend my knees (bone on bone in left, arthritis not quite as bad on right.) I stand with feet a little apart and shift my weight back and forth miving my arms as much as possible with my joints limitations.

I 've lost 200# over last 3 years, deliberate deprivition, but just learned low calorie diets are terrible for osteoporosis! I've made changes working with a nutritionist.

I' ve had lengthy discussions about the drug options with my endocrinologist who is just precious!

My dentist told me today: Alendronate has long half-life and stays in your for decades. After 3 doses of Reclast, no one will take teeth out if necessary. NO ONE!! Reclast doesn't build bone. So many risks, it's tearing me apart!

I think I have answered your questions.

Hope all is well with you and your family. I wish many blessings for you. Warmest regards, Sunnyflower

@colleenyoung Colleen, I had to drop out of the Mayo Connect for awhile. My daughter was getting off a horse and slipped. the horse stepped on her ankle and she ended up with a compound fracture in the Tibia, was fixed that night. Then a week later they went in to fix the fibula, which had 3 breaks. He put a plate on it and in 8 they will take it out. She was in tremendous pain, but is under control now with oxycodone every 5 hours. She was in the hospital for 13 days, waiting for a rehab place. Last Thursday they moved her to the Rehab Center of Des Moines. We can't see her yet, because of the covid-19. She seeing the surgeon today because it has been so swollen. It has been hard since I can't see her, but we do talk of the phone a lot. Jeanie lilypaws
