Ulcerative Colitis questions: Confused and frustrated

Posted by psdoolittle @psdoolittle, Jan 27, 2020

I have been navigating a UC diagnosis for about the last 6 months. Previously the stool bleeding was diagnosed as hemmeroidal, but things continued to progress until a colonoscopy revealed serious inflammation in the colon. After a grade 3 diagnosis, the doctors pushed for humira. I tried a very strict, anti-inflammatory diet first, and it helped a lot. Still a little blood in the stool tho. So tried mesalamine both oral and the suppository. I thought things were improving using b, as the color I saw in the stool was purple rather than red, but doctors said it was still blood and pushed again for humira. I took their advice and am now approaching the 7th injection. I have more bleeding now than ever and I have abdominal pain and urgency. I am definitely in the middle of one of my worst flareups. Anyone out there have a similar story and advice? I'm feeling confused and frustrated.

I'm constipated every day on a low residue diet for moderate to severe ulcerative colitis. What should I do?

Thanks guys. I love prunes so I'll try that first! Maria.

It’s not a good feeling for sure. Dulcolax works nicely as it is a stool softener. Along with drinking plenty of water, walking eating those veggies. Sometimes rubbing your tummy can stimulate things to happen. Hope this helps you.

The probiotic Visbiome (GI recommenced this years ago) and a whole food plant based diet have kept things good for me. Diagnosed with UC over 3 years ago; currently on biologic, Entyvio, and in clinical remission.🙏🤞. Good luck!

@mariajean03 I take acidophilus chewables (1 billion parts) and never had constipation even taking hydrocodone. It also eliminated the daily nausea I used to have.

I love vegetables but can't digest them properly. Stool softeners are not strong enough.

It’s eating foods that are minimally processed. It’s very similar to a vegan style eating: whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes. I have researched several studies that have clinically proven that this type of diet relieves many of the symptoms of Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis. When I was at my worst, with bloody diarrhea 15-17 times a day, unable to leave the house or even maintain 100 pounds, my GI doc recommended Entyvio and a consult with a colorectal surgeon to remove my colon and rectum if things did not improve. I had exhausted all tiers of treatment, from oral mesalamine to both oral and rectal budesonide to prednisone and the UC was “fulminant.” I had read some studies about the WFPB diet and how it made a significant difference in symptoms, so I figured I had nothing to loose! There are so many sites out there with recipes and ideas on how to cook and eat. It has made such a difference in my life!! I have the Entyvio infusions every 8 weeks and continue to eat this way. I have been able to maintain weight and feel good for the first time in years! My C-reactive protein and cal protection numbers (inflammation markers) are all within normal ranges. I don’t miss meat at all; I do miss dairy, but it’s a small price to pay to feel good again! UC is a chronic condition and it’s something I’ve learned to live with. I had my annual colonoscopy in July and my doctor was thrilled that there was significant improvement in the mucosal lining, so what I’m doing seems to be working.... I hope this helps.
