Have you seen anything like this Crazy Hip of mine

Posted by cupcaker @cupcaker, Sep 2, 2020

I’m 56 yrs old and I had my left hip replaced 6 weeks ago. A few days after surgery I noticed a light red 6” circle on my upper buttock/hip area. My surgery was an anterior approach. Within the following week the circle was becoming elongated and going down the back of my upper thigh. When I was able to remove my bandage there was a 2” spot across my incision. It was darker than the rest of the incision and felt hard. Overall incision looked pretty good. Things have worsened almost daily. I’ve finished a round of baclofen and then clindimyacin and was given a rocephin shot last Thursday. Blood work doesn’t really show signs of infection but it is sore, achy and has really made the muscles in my thigh hurt.. I have been having signs of infection like sweating and feeling awful but can’t say I’ve had a fever. I’m not one to sit around. I’m usually up managing our family cafe 13 hours a day. This is keeping me down. Once I’m up for an hour or more I do start experiencing quite a bit of pain. Dr wants me to wait 2 more weeks and then run blood tests again. Has anyone ever seen anything like this. I must say I’m getting a little worried now and not sure waiting 2 more weeks is a good idea. Photos are in order from beginning until now.

Hello @cupcaker, Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I have not had a hip replacement but I had a knee replacement last year and it feels like I'm close to needing a hip replacement on the same side. The pictures certainly look like it could be an infection but then I don't have any medical background or training. I did find some information that you may find helpful.

@marysapp, @mrcapri, @melar1, @lynnd1961, and @scottjeffe have discussed hip replacements and may have some experience to share with you.

Have you mentioned to the doctor or surgeon that the area you painted in has grown as you might suspect if it's an infection?

Thanks for the article. My Dr is aware of the redness outside the lines but not quite to the extent that it has changed. Sending me in for a CT today. I just need to get this fixed so I can start getting on top of things.
