@trellg132 If you are over weight, I would recommend loosing weight.

My young doctor recommended I lose 10 lbs based on my current weight. With the research I have done, diet is very important -- Cutting out sugar & carbs. I still have to work on this! I don't want to end up with Cirrhosis of the liver.

@trellg132 You are very fortunate to have a doctor so on top of things that he has recognized that you have fatty liver. I obviously didn't and it progressed to cirrhosis before anyone realized it. Even after having some severe symptoms of cirrhosis I was still not diagnosed for almost a year and a half. I had a liver transplant in September 2016.

You need to improve your diet and if you are overweight try to lose some weight. Alcohol can also contribute to fatty liver. I have a friend who was diagnosed with fatty liver and she has really improved her diet and has stopped drinking alcohol. I am surprised that your doctor did not give you some guidelines on dietary changes you should implement. Here is a link to Non-alcoholic fatty liver on the Mayo site. Fatty liver is reversible so as I said, you are very fortunate to still be at the point where it has not progressed.

@trellg132 I really am stunned that your doctor did not advise you on ways to improve your fatty liver. I hope you will seek a second opinion, by a hepatologist if possible. If not a hepatologist then by a different doctor of internal medicine. Hepatologists can be difficult to find unless you are close to a major medical center.

When you seek a second opinion from the same type of doctor it generally is best to not go to a doctor within the same medical arena, such as working for the same hospital. They tend to really not want to contradict other doctors within that area. In the meantime, I hope you will follow the guidance in the link I sent before.

Hi @deloresthanasse. Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You were diagnosed with fatty liver as well, I see. changing your diet is definitely a step in the right direction to counteract the fatty liver and any symptoms that accompany it.
Delores, when were you diagnosed with this?

My brother was diagnosed this year with fatty liver disease. I told him to quit eating fried fatty foods and to quit drinking wine and beer. I think he drinks a lot. He also has high cholesterol too. I don't think he'll quit drinking.
