Training Materials For Hospital Staff-Hearing Loss Patients

Our local Commission on Disability wants to purchase see-through medical face masks for our regional hospital. I suspect we will meet with the hospital's ADA officer and we will need to present a case for how to use the masks and how to communicate with hearing loss persons. For example, a hearing loss person should be able to call ahead, say he/she has a hearing loss and therefore the medical staff to treat him/her would be issued see-through masks and alerted to use paper/pencil, or small whiteboards, when necessary. My question is this: Does anyone have or know of any materials for this type of presentation? This project is just getting started. I know hospitals receive rudimentary training on ADA issues, but with this masked world, tactics and strategies need to be re-stated. The HLAA website has a lot of material but is from the patient perspective. I am looking for hospital staff training perspective. Thanks in advance!

Where are you located? I have done some trainings in this area in Wisconsin, but it was 'pre masking' era, although the issue of face coverings was included in the training. We are working on something similar here again. May be able to collaborate, or put you in touch with someone who is involved in developing a new program in Wisconsin. We know that this issue is NOT commonly understood of by hospital personnel. The ADA covers a lot, but many do not related it to communication.

HLAA has a Communication Action Plan (CAP) "Guide for Effective Communication in Health Care" that addresses the Patient's and Provider's roles.
