Downsizing, To Move or Not to Move? That is the Question

Posted by Rosemary, Volunteer Mentor @rosemarya, Apr 12, 2020

At some point as we age, we will have to make a decision about leaving our homes and downsizing. Maybe in our own town or to another town. Maybe to smaller home, condo, apartment, or assisted living/senior community.

When the time comes to downsize, seniors can struggle with a multitude of emotional, physical, and financial challenges.

How do you make an informed decision about when to downsize?
What tips do you have to share?

Sundance - I'm happily retired and spend my time volunteering, playing with grands & pursuing hobbies. When not in pandemic mode, we also travel. My husband took his "new" car in for service last week, and was told he doesn't drive it enough to maintain the battery - only 800 miles in 6 months - our normal would be more like 8000 miles.

@sueinmn My less than 3-year-old battery died from lack of use. It was still under warranty so we did get a replacement one. I guess now with a brand new battery that won't happen but I do try to take it out every few days.

Sue, How Funny! There was an article in our daily paper talking about someone who's car won't start after sitting for a while! They recomended what's called a "Maintainer" ! I had two Classic Mercedes that would happen to! They were always in the garage! Both were convertables so from December to April they wern't driven! There is also what they call a "Trickle Charger"! Problem with those is they don't shut off when the battery is fully charged!
Went up to north of Santa Fe in Tesuque to have lunch with a friend! It was arounf 40 degrees, but NO WIND! The have a coverd Patio, because we can't dine indoors in New Mexico! The sun was just right so it came through the opening, it was Delightful! Haven't been up there in many years at this little resturant.
Don't know if you know that area, but I took the back way down on the oOd Spanish Trail past a Resort called "Bishops Lodge"! Been there for over 50 years. The road is a narrow twisting two lane road. Drove at 30mph and enjoyed every minute of it!

Safer and better is a "Maintainer"! Does the same as a trickle charger but has a safety feature that shuts off when the battery is fully charged! A trickle charger if not checked can over charge the battery and ruin it.

Yes, we found out his 25-35-45? year-old trickle charger is not up to the task, and he bought a new one. We have a battery maintainer in the garage (somewhere) but I am thinking it is at least 20 years old (from when we had kids parking in the driveway) and we should get a new one to put on. As a temporary solution we are alternating driving errands between my beloved 42 mpg Prius and his not so thrifty Subaru.

@sueinmn @sundance6 We have a couple of trickle chargers. My husband set the motorcycles up with anderson poles for ease in connecting everything up. The old Jeep seems to need a boost any time it sets for a couple of weeks, so we try to use it for running errands. It has no heat, so we bundle up well! My car [like Sue's, a real economical one!] gets out every 10 days or so.

Sue, I have become "Mr. Cheap" in my "Old Age"! I probably Overthink things to much! But I reasearch and compare pricing and compare value! I found mine at Wally World! If I remember it was under $30!
I used to deal a lot in Fly Fishing equipment, buying and selling on Ebay! One seller wrote a coment back that I was hard to deal with as a buyer!
Really didn't care! I wasn't in the business to lose $$$. Once in a while Nostalgia got the better of me! I always try to be fair with anyone I deal with!
Hope you alll have a Great Weekend!
They say Northern New Mexico,in some areas, will get up to two feet of snow in the next 36 hours ,2045 hours on Friday, now! Road to Chaco will not be nice! The road from north of ABQ up to there is already issuing Winter Storm warnings and discourging Travel!

Isn't it lovely to be retired and get to choose (mostly) when to travel? I remember making some early trips to Texas in truly dreadful January weather - now we go (in non-Covid times) in October, and come home in April.

We are fortunate that our Minnesota season, so far, has had only 2 major snowfalls and two days with below-zero minimum temperatures. And the past 3 mornings we have had lovely "fairy fog" on all our trees.

I am not attached to very many of my possessions, and willingly pass them on, often for free, when no longer needed/wanted - I think my upbringing with 5 siblings in a 3 bedroom home, and 5 cousins who were like siblings, sharing virtually everything except underwear and socks, made me that way. My Dad would literally feed people off the street - but that's another story...

My husband, on the other hand was essentially an only - only son, sisters 10 & 11 years older. Nobody ever touched his stuff, he had places to accumulate whatever he wanted. He has a very hard time discarding possessions, even things not used for 20 years and not likely to be ever used again.

We all have such different experiences in life, and such different personalities. I have one daughter who treats belongings like I do and recycles them quickly, another who would literally keep the envelops her bills arrived in if she had the space.

Oh how we all are so different in some ways and so similiar in others! I was an only child, so my things were important and valuable to me not in a monetary sense, but just because it's mine! Because of what went on in my family in my younger years because of money my house is very Special to me!
I have started to go through my wardrobe and eliminating clothes I haven't worn for years! They had two guys helping me unload my car at Goodwill!
Yet in saying that I kept two t shirts from 30 to 40 years ago! Not to insult anyone because of religion or sexual implecations but here is what both of them say.
First one says, "I SURVIVED CATHOLIC SCHOOL"! A dear lady friend and I would wear them to parties, always got Great laughs and a lot of "You to also, and then stories about their childhood! The other a very old friend of 40 years, we were both executives of a major car rental company and belonged to at that time called American Ski Association also Ski New Mexico and several other associations found Tshirts in some shop or bar that we would always wear the first night of a conferance. They Said, "GIVE ME ROSSINGNAL OR GIVE ME H@#$"! Always got a lot of laughs! Anyway they are still in my closet after all these years. I keep the last one my friend and I were notrious wearing going through airports it is Special to me because he has Late Stage Dementia and dosen't remember me now or remember or times together!
But a $90 Ralph Luren polo is on a homeless person in ABQ!
Had a Bad day health wise today, but going to work on the house in the morning if I feel better!
We didn't get the Big Snow we were supposed to today so we wait for another week! It's blowing through to WEST TEXAS so that should be fun driving tomorrow! May even head north to Minnesota! Very dry here this year! But it is a High Desert so what do you expect!

@sueinmn We sound so similar! I am downsizing a lot of my crafts right now. Not that I am not fond of all my beads and findings, and macrame things, but honestly, am I going to use them or gawk at them? My neighbor is "into" rockhounding, and has discovered tumbling semi-precious stones and beads, so all those beads are great for her. Likewise gifting out quilting fabric/ patterns to those who can make use of them. My dad also brought people home for dinner, like your dad.

Over the years there are small things that have found their way into my "sentimental value" pile, memories stirred up that only I would recall. Nothing big, and sure to cause consternation to others, later! A stone, small brass vase...
