Sudden loss of taste or smell. What could this mean?

Posted by nclarke001 @nclarke001, Mar 21, 2020

Last Monday, I was having my coffee, and it tasted bitter. To make a long story short, I lost my sense of taste and my sense of smell. I’m scared. What could this mean?

The UK goverment announced yesterday that loss of taste or smell should be regarded as a possible Covid-19 symptom. You should get this checked out asap. Good luck and I hope you stay well

Oops, lost the name of the orig poster saying her doc had warned her not to take any NSAIDS. My kidney specialist warned me against them too and said to take Tylnol if necessary.

Hi, @fiesty76 - a helpful way to see what the original poster on a thread said and who it was is to click on VIEW & REPLY in your email notification. That will take you to the entire discussion on the Connect site where you can look at what that member and others have said.

Have you experienced any sudden loss of taste or smell, feisty76?

@wildcat - thanks for the information on the UK government's mention of these symptoms. Have you noted your senses have been affected at all?

Lisa, thank you for the info. No loss in taste or smell but seasonal allergies which can turn into bronchitis if I'm not careful. This means I'm spending more time inside the house and much, much less than I would like out in the flowerbeds.

@fiesty76 My allergies are terrible this time of year . Pollen mostly here from trees and flowers budding . I had to get a prescription from the Dr. which helps Cant wait for this season to be over for this reason but in fall same thing. Ug

Hi @nclarnclarke001. Have you other underlying medical condition? I too all of a sudden had a lost of taste because I was overly sensitive to the sweetness in food. It was difficult to eat because all food tasted very sweet. Nothing tasted the same as I knew it. Two months earlier I had a ruptured AVM with partial repair. My medical team had no answers and were baffled of the cause. I later started again my multivitamin which I had taken before my AVM and without problems. After 4 days I developed a bitter taste. I stopped it at once and the bitterness slowly dissipated. After 3 days it was completely gone. I attribute the bitterness taste to the iron content. My next attempt will be to try a multivitamin without iron. I will say after a month or 2 of being on the Keto diet my taste came back. I was so delighted to be able to enjoy foods again. I think it had to do with eating very few carbohydrates. I hope you solve your mysterious change in taste and smell. Rely on yourself to find answers and be positive.
