Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots.Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@amandajro

I know some of you are already in the discussion "Recipes, Food Tips, Healthy Eating & More" but for those of you who aren't and would like to continue the discussion around food and fare, please hop over to that discussion so we can keep supporting members who are here for the walking support!

Back to walking and talking.

Thanks, all! (Speaking of... I have yet to get mine in for the day.)

@amandajro I might be a bit behind in my walking this week. Had laser eye surgery this a.m. in both eyes for Glaucoma/high pressure and need to protect from light this week. Steroid drops 4xday plus dryness drops 4xday, plus bedtime prescription drops. Back in a few days, folks. Happy trails. Laurie P.S. wasn't told I have Glaucoma til today. Yet another condition to add to my very long list. Already blind in one eye from the GCA!

You mentioned 4 favorite things...fried catfish, sweet potato fries, mystery, Netflix. White wine mandatory. What’s your address?
Do I need boots?

Set another place at the table. I'm inviting myself along. Although I'll let Hurricane Mary can have my share of catfish. She’ll scarf down any varmint you put in front of her from the top of Mt Everest to the bottom of Challenger deep. Fried okra would go good with that too. I didn't see desert mentioned. Okay, I'll bring desert. Let's see, sweet potato pie sounds good. sweet potato anything sounds good even though I’m only supposed to have it very rarely according to the doctor but why be a trailblazer and be the first person to obey Dr.‘s orders. Maybe a cheesecake on the side with crumbled candy bars and Carmel sauce drizzled (generously) on top.
I wonder if Mary has any pets. If not it makes one wonder why???🤔

By all means, join the party, @jakedduck1! No need to add weight to your flight, I have plenty of Halloween chocolates to share...but otoh, a slice of cheesecake with any topping would be delish too! Hmmm, Leonard, do ya think I might need to hide Precious from our @imallears, Mary??? She says she's had all sorts of pets so mebbe kitty will be safe if she stays under the bed??

And on second thought, with cheesecake and key lime pie, maybe we could forget the fish fry and head straight to the desserts???

Come on down? Where do you live? If I came down any further I would be in the water. In fact I can walk to the water ((Anclote River) gateway to the Gulf of Mexico, from my house in 5 minutes. Why don’t I do that now....

@imallears, @fiesty76, @becsbuddy, @artist01... Fl Mary, sounds like you've lived in sunny south for a while, probably have good, white sand between your toes now instead of icey snow! Glad you enjoy life in Fl. I do, too, but do get tired of the humidity when it's really hot. Don't breath so well then, so AC is my friends. BUT, even love I love the snow, not the ice and I couldn't survive in the cold, would have to stay inside there too.....POOH! Love them both, but body rebeles and you listen.
Hope your walking snakes aren't rattlers, more the black or green or garden variety. Anyway, most are scared of you more unless you threaten them. Previous home backed up to a lovely creek that flows into the St. Johns River. In the woods and shared space, sort of, with moccasins. They aren't afraid of anything and are very aggressive! Don't like them at all.....had one in back of my condo, thought he was a small baby dying.....started to p/u w/stick and he became very alive, opened his white cotton mouth and attacked me! Summer, I was in sandals and shorts and totally unprepared....I ran faster since he was hurt.
Not a snake person, but rattlers do taste good.
Mary, it's hot today! 81, sunny and beautiful. Going for little walks with my hot pink walker....will report in. Won't be long as it's too hot for me. blessings, enjoy this life! elizabeth

@ess77, Like you, Elizabeth, I am so glad I experienced heavy snow laden climes when much younger, more limber and unafraid of snow and ice!

Now, I am awed by the hardiness of our walkers who continue to brave those frigid temps despite snow and ice! High humidity is a tough nut for me as well. If added to heat, it makes me feel like I am trying to walk through ocean waves. My lungs cry out for relief from the added strain.

My childhood friend and I were going for a swim in her dad's large cattle tank when we saw a snake in the water. Terrified, we scrambled out and ran as fast as we could to her dad. One cotton mouthed rattler less but there was no mention of having it for dinner. I've been frightened of snakes ever since.

Smile every time I think of you strolling with your trend setting walker, Elizabeth. You and @imallears will soon be posting photos of your new lovely FL tans, yes?

If you live in Florida you generally avoid tans and use sunscreen when out walking. The sun is brutal this time of year. I leave sunscreen on my bathroom countertop to remind me to put it on my arms and hands or any exposed areas. Almost every car in Florida had tinted windows. Only tourists have tans or sunburn. I think we have glows instead of tans. I also use a tanning cream fairly often. I admit it does look healthy and nice but notice all the hats and sunglasses we wear down here. Rather have a fake one than a real one.

I don’t think there’s anything fake about you Mary, eerily scary yes but fake no.

Have you had your vitamin D checked lately. Although your varied 🤑diet🤮(nothing was said about pics) may have you covered. But if you or anyone else hasn’t been checked you should be.

@jakedduck1
Actually I have...thanks for asking. I take a Vit D3 supplement in my arsenal of vitamins. 3 years ago I had a D deficiency and my daughter told me to take a supplement and then sent me for a lab just for the D. Only took 2 weeks to get it back up in the right range.
Going to NJ next weekend so we will feel the cold .
While I was never told I was scary, a guy I dated several years ago told me I was too strong for him...the wimp. Will always be a New Yorker I guess. Out the doors now for the day in the humidity.
