Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@ess77, So here's the deal, Elizabeth, come on down and I'l tickle the ivories while you paint and then I'll serve you a fried catfish, okra, sweet potato fries dinner then we can watch a mystery on Netflix while some of that artery clogging grease we've just ingested melts away. How's about it????

Set another place at the table. I'm inviting myself along. Although I'll let Hurricane Mary can have my share of catfish. She’ll scarf down any varmint you put in front of her from the top of Mt Everest to the bottom of Challenger deep. Fried okra would go good with that too. I didn't see desert mentioned. Okay, I'll bring desert. Let's see, sweet potato pie sounds good. sweet potato anything sounds good even though I’m only supposed to have it very rarely according to the doctor but why be a trailblazer and be the first person to obey Dr.‘s orders. Maybe a cheesecake on the side with crumbled candy bars and Carmel sauce drizzled (generously) on top.
I wonder if Mary has any pets. If not it makes one wonder why???🤔

Who has got their walk in today, whether it is outside or inside on the treadmill? In Rochester, we are still dealing with snow after Monday's snowfall and now it is a bit icy so feel like it is a good treadmill day if nothing else.

🤣🤣🤣
I have 4 grand dogs and grew up with and had all through my adult years...cats, dogs, gerbils, hamsters, parakeets, fish, salt water and fresh water aquariums and even a baby alligator that my dad sent to me in NY from Florida. And that’s another whole story. Fried grouper is a biggie in Florida. Fried catfish , if it has the right seasoning, is amazing. Bring cheesecake Leonard...any kind and I’ll bring Key Lime Pie and chocolate covered mosquitos for your pleasure. I’m sure one of our small ethnic stores sells them...I’ll check. Have to keep the skeeter population down somehow.

Buzzing off to the gym now.

@artist01 Well, we ended up with 20”. Today, the sun is out and it looks beautiful! Our son, who lives in the “snow capital” of Colorado, got all of 4”. Will try for a walk today!
Photo of the snow and out street. Haven’t ventured out yet. But sun is out so it should be warm!

So pretty, @becsbuddy I love the look of snow the day after and it seems as if the sun always comes out the next day making everything sparkle.
My son told us that none of the side-streets in Denver get plowed after it snows! I can't imagine that. Here they are out plowing as soon as there's any accumulation, and back numerous times over the course of a storm. I guess a 4-wheel drive car is an absolute necessity out there.

No walk yet, however I will get one in today. I spent a good share of yesterday clearing away the snow and it was heavy/wet. My yard had just seen all green and then Mother Nature said “oh it’s March Madness, there needs to be snow”. The deer were eating all of my new spring growth of plants, not sure they are welcome, I do enjoy what I have planted. So hard to see them feast off of my hard labor.

@jude07, I can relate to your deer eating your plants. I have already told my story of the crocus appearing one day and gone the next. Also, the deer ate every bud from our freshly planted mums. We had those planted by a company and we really never got to enjoy them. The deer are ceaseless in their search for something new to eat. They will try anything and spit it out if they decide they don't like it. A few years ago during rutting season, a buck used his antlers to strip the bark from my Japanese Maple tree. Of course, it died. I would give up, but my husband keeps trying new things. We have found the deer do not eat the daffodils, but those were planted long ago and last year a lot of them did not bloom. It will be interesting to see what does bloom this year. Good luck! @joybringer1

If a deer killed my maple he'd be in the freezer.

Oh that is gorgeous! I am from NY originally and miss those scenes. I wish it would snow there just once lol. We have so many sunny days (not complaining) that we really enjoy a rainy gloomy day where we can just veg out on the sofa and binge Netflix.
I would love to be a FL snow bird but everyone moved down here.

@imallears, @fiesty76, @becsbuddy, @artist01... Fl Mary, sounds like you've lived in sunny south for a while, probably have good, white sand between your toes now instead of icey snow! Glad you enjoy life in Fl. I do, too, but do get tired of the humidity when it's really hot. Don't breath so well then, so AC is my friends. BUT, even love I love the snow, not the ice and I couldn't survive in the cold, would have to stay inside there too.....POOH! Love them both, but body rebeles and you listen.
Hope your walking snakes aren't rattlers, more the black or green or garden variety. Anyway, most are scared of you more unless you threaten them. Previous home backed up to a lovely creek that flows into the St. Johns River. In the woods and shared space, sort of, with moccasins. They aren't afraid of anything and are very aggressive! Don't like them at all.....had one in back of my condo, thought he was a small baby dying.....started to p/u w/stick and he became very alive, opened his white cotton mouth and attacked me! Summer, I was in sandals and shorts and totally unprepared....I ran faster since he was hurt.
Not a snake person, but rattlers do taste good.
Mary, it's hot today! 81, sunny and beautiful. Going for little walks with my hot pink walker....will report in. Won't be long as it's too hot for me. blessings, enjoy this life! elizabeth

@joybringer1, @jude07. Have you tried urine re the deer? I understand that keeps them away....guess you'd have to have a way to spread it far from where you sit to enjoy the flowers and garden, tho? Also, chili pepper? We have the same issue here but some of my friends found natural help like that. One friend, a fraternity sister, plants hundreds of pansies....our fraternity flower.... and finally found a way to slow them down. But, they are good in salads, pansies. Enjoy your day and be blessed! elizabeth

@jude07, isn't there something you can put out there around your plants to keep the deer away? Maybe through out some seed or grass or something they like and they'd leave your plants alone? I would go nuts seeing some beautiful or not so beautiful animal munching on my special flowers or plants.....especially if I bent over and planted each one! I put moth balls outside my fence a few times when rats came up from the creek to my patio......seemed to keep them away some.....squirrels don't like them either. Nor do snakes, I think...may be mistaken there.

But, we have a lot of rain and it washed away most of the help I was getting. Love the deer and it must be lovely watching them, but it would also break my heart! Blessings, Jude and enjoy your walk in your cleared street. Don't know how you keep up with that snow and the work.....enjoy, elziabeth
