Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@imallears, I'm game for trying just about any new food but called a halt at snake! lol A nearby community hosts an annual rattlesnake round-up and people travel miles to participate in both the round up and snake feast that follows. The thought has me shivering!

@fiesty76. I had snake in a soup when I was very young. Tasted like chicken... lol. . It warmed you up in the cold winter. Try it, you may like it.

I’ll get on board with your “no thank you” to snake.
My grandparents lived on a rocky farm where there were rattlesnakes, so he would take a pitchfork with him when he walked from the house to the barn. We would visit them quit often, however I was always more comfortable playing in the house rather than the yard.

I would like to try rattlesnake. I've known quite a few people who all say it's really good.

@becsbuddy Becky, did you mean to type "only 1.4 inches of snow" instead of "only 14 inches of snow"?

@artist01 Well, we ended up with 20”. Today, the sun is out and it looks beautiful! Our son, who lives in the “snow capital” of Colorado, got all of 4”. Will try for a walk today!
Photo of the snow and out street. Haven’t ventured out yet. But sun is out so it should be warm!

@jakedduck1 Yep! Really good, as is gator. When you get a chance to try either of these delicacies, do so! Hope all is well your way, Leonard. Blessings, elizabeth

@fiesty76 You're a hoot! A little nudge to try the round-up and a touch of rattlesnake. The only snake I've eaten, but it was delicious, fiesty. And, they are havested for our protection, so consuming them is appropriate, in my thinking. I'm close to not eating animals, but salmon and I love fried catfish.....southern thing and only fried I eat are catfish, okra, sweet potatoe fries. I bet the round-up is interesting....love your walking testimonies....blessings,my friend. elizabeth

@becsbuddy Just sent you message on picture site....add this beauty to the wall, also! Lovely! Cold! Amazing at mid-March when we're in full pollen and azaleas and redbud and lilies are beginning to bloom....Guess you're walking will happen maybe this afternoon or after it warms some? I'm amazed you and @sueinmn walking long distances in this....Sue spent yesterday working in the gardens!!!! You are all doing well. My heart's with you, wish I could do that. Perhaps, gradually as I get back into the pool I'll start taking out my hot pink walker!!!! Have a few more semi-invasive tests then I go back to pool! blessings in your lovely walks! elizabeth

Oh, dear, I hope this doesn't change our friendship, @artist01 but the one food I resist above all is boiled turnips. Seemed like my mom served them weekly and the smell alone lasted for days. Turnip greens are another matter entirely...so is the friendship back on??? Smiles

@fiesty76 Soft music playing in the background... Lalala, you will never lose my friendship over boiled turnips, Lalala! Fiesty, when I was a kid, I hated turnips, but now that I'm a Wise Elder, I love them. We always mash them with butter, pepper and brown sugar added. Always had them with roasts or turkey dinners. Really good the next day mashed up with the leftover mashed potatoes. Mmmmm. Never tried turnip greens. Similar to spinach maybe?

@becsbuddy Oooh, beautiful snow picture of your beautiful street, Becky! It snowed here yesterday, so no walking, but today is gorgeous at 41 F and sunny with no wind! A great walk; broke my record at 1.64 km, which my Alexa just informed me is a bit over a mile. 1.6 km in a mile. I'm so happeeee! Happy trails. Laurie

Thank you for the picture Becky. I love snow or ice covered trees. To cold to to walk in though.
Only 47° here and I need to go to the store. My brother doesn’t have very good sense he walks around with it short sleeve shirt all winter. One day I got in his car in the winter and the air conditioner was on, go figure.
