Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Hi All. Been dealing with additional medical problems...oxygen 24/7 mid-year and pneumonia November/December. Through the grace of God I’ve been given a new lease on life. Read the posts daily, enjoying them all. Restarted walking in December (hallways), walking laps in two sections daily, twice a day. Each lap is 0.09 mile, and depending on the day, walk close to a mile daily. Also getting in two manual breathing treatments, nebulizing and the compression vest, as well as arm exercises for breast cancer. Whew, now I’m exhausted. Takes a large part of each day. Haven’t felt this good in two years. I’m truly blessed.

@wisco50 I just HAVE to do this. Forgive me: You know this, I'm sure:

Spring has sprung, the grass has riz,
I wonder where the birdies is.
Haven't you heard, the birds is on the wing.
Well, ain't that absurd!
I always thought the wings was on the bird!
🤣 Happy trails, Laurie

LOL, actually I had only ever heard the beginning lines, not the ones about birds and wings - so you taught me something new! 😆

It occurred to me that we started walking a whole year ago. And we’ve been under masking and stay at home and social distancing orders forever! But we’re still walking and doing home exercises and swimming (and eating). Give yourselves a pat on the back! Now is also the time to find some of members who just kept right on walking. Where are you @lioness and @1065408 and @starko and @merpreb and @mayofeb2020 and @gingerw and @jakedduck1 ? Come walk with us!

I haven’t been riding much here because I haven’t been very active. I’m usually most active when I go somewhere and walk around parking lots but I haven’t been out for a while.
I walked around the block two or three times and some days the best I do is walk around the house and take the garbage out which is a pretty pathetic walk.
I will try and be a little more energetic.

@jakedduck1 Aw, Jake, we missed you. So sorry you haven't felt up to par lately. Doing the best we can do is sometimes all we can do, and I know all of us here have days like that. We understand! I hope you'll be up and running soon! My very best to you. Laurie

@jakedduck1 😂 Oh darn, I was visualizing you galloping along in those parking lots on your horse! 🤣

You are funny. I'm afraid your confidence is a little misplaced. I don't think that was a vision I think it was a hallucination. Although I'm not worried about falling off a horse because you have to get up there first.
Maybe I need someone walking near me dangling a candy bar in front of me as an incentive. Now that's what I call encouragement!!!
Happy trails to you,
until we meet again,
Jake
