Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Where would you like to walk? Yuma, AZ? Or Tombstone? I’m sure you don’t get ice and snow!

Hi, all, I’m thinking maybe now is time to set a new goal for our walking. Last time, some people walked a couple hundred miles and some of us didn’t even make it to the next town! I know it’s cold out, but...... One rule, @jakedduck1 has to take the long way to the candy store! I think I’ll walk to the quilt museum in Golden, CO. I’ll have to look up the mileage!

I found better clarity of mind and as well as renewed strength once I stopped the OxyContin after my back fracture. I pushed myself, everyday, to get down my flight of stairs and outside. Sometimes only walking a very short distance, however adding a few steps each day and then one day making progress of walking up to the hill on my street. Once home I had to roll back into my hard turtle shell and rest, however Tylenol was a huge help for rest. Blessings to all for a good day.
Prayers/positive thoughts would be appreciated today for my 5 yr old grandson. He is in Boston Children's Hospital. Thanks

Well, Becky, I have to re-set my previous goal, interrupted by weather and illness. I'll try for one perimeter of my very large building again, at 10 minutes. However, the forecast is for rain, rain, rain but as long as it's not too cold, I'm in for it. Lately is been hovering at -7 C.

@fiesty76 Good morning, Fiesty. You made my day! Thank you! I’ve always been athletic and took my strength/balance for granted. I think we all do... Never in my life had I felt frail. That feeling scared me outta my skin! It hadn’t occurred to me it was my lack of core strength throwing me off!

The shocker was when my physical therapist, at the first appointment, had me stand in front of a Ballet bar. She instructed me not to touch it but to have my hands hover over the top in case I lost my balance. She had me close my eyes and raise one foot off the ground. Easy peasy, right? Nope!! The second I closed my eyes, I was going over, but grabbed the bar of course. That rattled me!!

Such a simple test to check for balance but so revealing! Try doing that in front of a chair or a countertop for support and test your own balance. Holding your hands out over the counter or chair for a quick grab, close your eyes then lift one foot slightly off the ground. Do you feel tippy? Then try the other foot.

Honestly, it took less than a week for my feeling of frailty to pass and my balance to return after doing the simple exercises she provided. Do you do any arm strengthening exercises?

We’ll be so buff by the time people can see us again. Go take on the day!! Lori.

Oh, Lori, @loribmt, you just provided my first smile of the morning! Also athletic and truly a kid at heart, I first realized I had balance issues a few years ago when attempting a heel-to-toe walk on a wide curbing surrounding a playa lake. What had been so easy brought a real jolt when I wobbled and had to jump off the curb.

That wake up call lead me to searching the 'net for core strengthening and balance exercises. I printed and clipped four easy and quick-to-dos to kitchen cabinet handles and of the four, the one you mentioned is the first I do each time in the kitchen! And Yes! at first I was shocked at how quickly I'd wobble but now I can do each of the four for much longer periods and even away from a "support".

Unfortunately, I did not save the web site for these four but one of the links you provided may include them.

I have really missed the "chair Yoga class" since it closed due to Covid but I do a few simple wt bearing exercises at home and on walks. Truly, I started with carrying two "reg. sized" cans of veggies and ramped up to two of the larger cans of La Choy chow mein. lol

The key for me, because I much prefer any exercise with another, sigh, is to find short exercises that I'll actually do!

Although I considered a variable weighted vest, I decided against that unless approved my a doc because of my osteoporosis. The "10 Minute Workout" is great and I need to see if I can find a web link to the site? Think there is a "join" button on the video so that may provide the needed link.

Best to you and all who are working to stay as active and steady-on-our-feet as possible!

Welll @feisty76, let's just say you walked right in to that one! Lol. There, I just brought you back on topic to our Walking site. Lol. Love your childhood tales! Happy trails. Laurie

@artist01, Indeed I did! LOL Witty You that I "walked" right in to that one!!!! Hugs, Laurie, for getting me back on track and on purpose with fellow walkers!!! Temps may touch mid-60s today so I'm off to put on my lace up shoes. Another big drop is predicted so I'd better take advantage of the mild, dry day! Yes to warmer days and the coming of Spring!

@becsbuddy, Yes! Count me in for the "revived" destination I'd set earlier! Goal for me is still Boulder,CO but from my location it is
574 miles by car and who can guess how many steps???? vbg Forget! Forget!! that SoWest can land me in Denver in about an hour.

Ahh well, isn't there a saying about: "nothing ventured, nothing gained" ??? vbg Whether inside, around the block or ticking off the miles, hope all can revel in more walking days!

@fiesty76 574 miles!! Why not pick the nearest town and when you get there, pick the next town? You can still get there! Becky
