Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@artist01, Like you, I keep changing which of my favorite restaurants and friends I'll choose first for dining in once more. Had to move three restaurant gift cards to the side of the frig to put them more out of sight! Hope your meds go down soon and inside dining becomes a possibility once more!

@feisty76, I don't have as much work to do as you do, since all 4 of my gift certificates are for my very favorite restaurant in town, which my family was so very aware of! Can't wait for that awesome day when we can make a dinner reservation!!

@jakedduck1 Leonard, I so agree! Along with a good walk and sunshine! And I’ve had all 3 today! Took the dog out for a walk in the nice sunshine. And now I’m eating M+Ms! My days have been getting better. Have to do a lot of walking tomorrow—supposed to snow on Wednesday. 😖

@becsbuddy Bet your dog enjoyed it along with you! We have dense fog here this morning, but I will get out for a short walk with my walking poles today. Down into the cul-de-sac and back, maybe up to the next corner. I always tell myself, you can turn around at any time, you're half way home. This morning's fuel-me-up breakfast is cottage cheese [my half cup daily dairy allotment] with a heaping tablespoon of crushed pineapple and a sprinkle of granola.

Great breakfast idea plus a “half way home” slogan!

Ginger, I'm going to use your "halfway home" slogan too. Great idea!

I know this isn't the gratitude discussion, but it's how I feel today!
It's lovely here - above freezing for a third day in a row. My parents (now gone) were married 75 years ago today on just such a day - thawing - all the pics were of the wedding party, wearing no coats, and holding their dresses high above the slush & mud outside the church (which was on a cobblestone street.) Today I'll muse about their long and wonderful life together as I walk. With any luck, I'll see the eagles on the local lake - I used to ride down to Wabasha, MN to watch them with Mom & Dad each fall to find them, then go to lunch at a local tea house. They raised 6 of us with love, faith and fun - in turn were blessed with 18 grandchildren, whom they loved and spoiled.
Wishing you all safe walks.
Sue

Such a beautiful tribute to your parents, thanks for sharing. I make the drive to Wabasha to see the Eagles and watch the Mississippi traffic as well, warms my heart and soul.

I walked another 2 miles today and survived the 70° weather. When my brother came to pick me up today he had the air conditioner going so I turned my seat on warm and turned my side of the air conditioning temperature up to 80°. I’ll be marathon material in no time. I just wish I enjoyed walking. If walking wasn’t so painful I could go farther and wouldn’t mind walking. But ever since I stopped using the Fentanyl patch I hurt from my neck to my feet and walking intensifies it. When I swam 5 miles a day at the YMCA I drove across the street for an ice cream bar. Speaking of ice cream while I was walking the ice cream truck came by and believe you me it was all I could do to keep from getting a 50-50 bar. I love those things. But unfortunately I was strong and resisted the temptation. Well I have been thinking about that 50-50 bar ever since that ice cream truck drove by. I wanted it even more than usual because I haven’t had any candy cookies or any other sweets today believe it or not. And to make matters worse I even cooked today. Chicken in French onion soup with asparagus & sweet potatoes. I thought it was good. It wasn’t as creative as some of the concoctions hurricane Mary (@imallears) would make to satisfy her sophisticated palette but it will keep me alive.
Happy trails to y’all,
Jake

@jakedduck1 I love it! Why did you stop the fentanyl patch? Did the doctor replace it with something else? Becky

That meal sounds delicious! If you cook again, I’ll bring dessert! 🤗
After 2 weeks and a few days of no walking - due to sub zero temps and then ice surfaces as a result - it was 40 degrees today in southern WI! Icicles crashing off houses, snow melting. I walked 2.2 miles today, yay! Felt SO good to get out and move!
Then I spread some Ice Melt on my driveway in areas where it’s shaded by a huge old spruce tree. We had so much snow pack it’s going to take at least a few more days to melt. Supposed to stay above freezing this week!

@wisco You've got such a great attitude about being out and about, or not, in this wonderful winter weather we’re having! I’ll keep walking if you do!
