Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I will try to walk in my house more cancer and other problems Bernie
Sorry, to hear you are facing more cancer, keep your strength through hope and a little walk in house is real courage. Bless you.
I’m back to walking outside also! It was so cold here with icy snow on the ground so......I stayed indoors. I feel so much better when I can get out and walk! Do you ever notice a difference in attitude when you can get out and walk?
@becsbuddy Hi Becky, my husband and I were just having the same conversation yesterday. After a huge stretch of sub zero weather, we can now resume our long walks outside. We’d take abbreviated walks in the sub cold but not our usual 2-a-day long walks outside. Wow, yesterday it was in the 20s, cardinals singing away...it was so refreshing and energizing. Not the rapid pushing along just to get it over with. I felt noticeably recharged with a brighter attitude and a renewed positivity. Think spring!!
My attitude indoors is GRUMPY for sure. I have been out more now, as well, and my attitude is more like Minnesota Nice again.
@stella76 May I ask what else do you do for self-care?
@jude07. Yep, I feel like a bear with a thorn in it's paw. So excited today, because I get to go on a 45 minute car trip with Wheels for Wellness for a doctor appointment! It takes so little to make us happy these days. Lol.
Can't wait to get outside today! It's thawing nicely, so the ice should be slush by afternoon (sounds silly to like it, but safer than ice in our no-sidewalks neighborhood. Did a Costco/carwash run already this morning.

We plant the "little trees" in little brother's mashed potatoes to try to get him to try it, but to him if it's green, it's bad. He has also been known to remove the almost-invisible bits of broccoli from tomato based sauces like chili or spaghetti. What a difference between the brothers.

Sue, your world is coming to life again! Yay!
