Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@jakedduck1 No wonder you’re not out walking today! 58 degrees must be unbearable. Insert eye roll. Let’s just put this into perspective. The temperature where I am was Minus 27 this morning. You have +58. There’s an 85 degree difference between us! LOL
It finally warmed up to -10 with no wind, so my husband and I were able to get in a couple miles under our mukluks today!
Joking aside, there’s no pressure to walk. Only encouragement. We all have to set our own pace in life. Enjoy that pumpkin pie! One of my favorites! Lori
@jakedduck1 Guess it's on its way down here I know most is the Ca rain.Back in Pa lighting, thunder and torrents of rain
Thanks @artist! We are on day 7 now with at least 5 more before we get to see zero (hopefully)! We used to go to Winnipeg every summer for the FolkFest and Selkirk for an Oldtimer’s hockey tournament. I’d love to visit Edmonton and Calgary sometime!
I’m I CA I. Rain yes had to pull over in So Carolina! Walked earlier I live near a hospital so I take my dog and go to the parking garage and we climb the stairs and take ramps and view the world from a new perspective
@migizii Oh, so you must be familiar with Winnipeg's mosquitos. They're so big, they bite a chunk out of you and fly up onto a tree branch to eat it!! 😆 Good for you, keeping up with your walking! I'm on Day 9 or is it 10? 19 minutes today, at -3 degrees, with the wind making it feel like -7, according to our weather office. Cold on the face!! Brrr. Stay warm, and happy walking. Best, Laurie
Hi Jake. Are you joking when you say your winters are brutal at 58 degrees? I think you're pulling our collective legs, aren't you? That's almost our summer!
Lol. I've been walking in below zero weather and thinking it was such a lovely mild winter this year. You are joking, aren't you Jake? Warm hugs, Laurie
Chuckle, chuckle, chuckle....
@loribmt, Thanks for your response, Lori. So far, my p.n. has not caused problems walking beyond being much more conscious of where I'm putting my numb feet to avoid stumping a toe and for balance issues. Can't stop my teeth chattering at just the thought of your -27 degree day! May the sun and many sent cyber smiles warm your day!
Nice idea with using the parking ramp for steps and a lookout point!!
Oh, Jake, @jakedduck1, how often you make us laugh! Thank you for each and every chuckle you engender!! You musta' been in south or central TX to see "real rain". There is precious little of it in my west TX area.
