Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@joybringer1. Your little Simon sounds like a sweetheart. He’s a very lucky boy to have found such a wonderful forever home allowing him to age with dignity and love. A Basenji isn’t a common breed and blended with a fox terror I bet he’s adorable and scary smart! 😉 He sounds like a little trouper though so I’m sure he’ll do fine with his cleaning procedure. The vet will closely monitor him while he’s under and they’ll use the minimal amount of sedative for him. I’m sorry he’s going through a rough patch. It really does affect everyone in the family. Does it bother him to go to the vet in general? Our daughter’s dog hates it even though he’s never had a bad time there! And he just knows when they’re going! LOL. For all he knows when he’s getting in the car, he could be going to the dog park or coming to visit us! But he knows when it’s the V E T. They are silly but such endearing characters. Wishing Simon and YOU all the best next week on his visit to the vet.

@loribmt, Thank you for your good wishes. Simon usually does not mind going to the vet, but last time he was trembling. I don't know if he could sense our worries or if the barking of very large dogs unnerved him. His vet once said he wished all of his patients were as good as Simon. Simon's internal clock is amazing. He knows exactly when it is time to eat and when it is cocktail time. No, he does not get liquor, but rather gets his dog treats at that time. It is so funny, if we are busy and it is past time, he starts pacing and reminding us it is time! We have never had a dog lose his sight so we will just have to adjust to this fact. When Simon was younger, he could walk on his hind legs, just like a human! Arthritis has put an end to that. We will always love him no matter what happens! @joybringer1

Good luck to dear-sounding Simon..think he'll do fine. Is this your only dog? ASnd what an unusual mix. Did you set out to get that particular type of dog? I had a Lhasa apso-Shiut-tsu(can't spell it to this day) for about 3 years; he was !~ 3 years old & could be ornery @ times but also loveable most of thje time. I wish youi luck w/ his procedure. @katiejo59, Simon is our only dog. We did not set out to find his particular mix. My husband wanted a dog since we were without one for many years. I told him to start his search at our local no-kill shelter. I thought it would take some time. Oh no, he found Simon very quickly. He asked me to come look at him and I did. I knew my husband had fallen for him and I stroked the side of his head and felt his calm demeanor. I was hooked, too. Thanks for wishing us luck. With so many good wishes, he is just bound to do well. @joybringer1

Oops, I did it again, Lori. Typed a long reply to you, and LOST it!! Aaaarrrgh!
Did you receive it, by chance? Likely not. Typing on a cell phone sucks big time!!
No, I'm not painting yet, but hope to!
No, nobody joins me in my walks but I don't mind. I can thus go at my own pace, and attempt to beat my previous times.
Thankyou for your very motivating messages.
Stay warm! Laur

@artist01, I get so aggravated with myself when I manage to "lose" a long reply! More so because I Know if I'd just first typed it into a word doc it could be pasted into the post reply. Still, I don't "start out" knowing my response will be lengthy...weak excuse i know...smiles

After my ever ready walking companion, Sunshine, passed away at age 17, it took a long time for me to resume walking by myself. Like you, though, I now savor my solitary walks without music or step counting. My goals are to walk at least 3 x's/week on specific days with a minimum time spent on each. More time on walks and additional walks are considered "worthy" of a small treat/reward. Whatever works, yes? Smiles to all.

Bravo to you, I just cannot tolerate walking in these zero and below temps - no matter what I put on my hands, my fingers just go nuts. Especially one that had an injury and bad infection years ago - still have poor circulation in that one/always will per MD.

@wisco50, I'm with you and can't tolerate walks in freezing weather. Diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy a couple of yrs ago, my feet have always been ice cold so I wasn't surprised by the diagnosis. However, this past yr, my hands have become increasingly sensitive to cold and being cold adverse in general, I stay inside and send kudos to those frigid temp walkercizers who can show their muster regardless of temps.

@fiesty76 I’m sorry you’re having this sensitivity to the cold! Does the neuropathy effect your walking at all? By the way, not sure I’ll be walking outside today, My muster is now frozen solid at -27 this morning. Stay warm!

Came across this little gem this morning. So very true! “An early morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.” Henry David Thoreau.
Keep on the path to good health and daily blessings fellow walkers! Lori.

Good one, Lori. I've written this Thoreau phrase on to a sticky to insert into my Walking Log journal! It will be my new mantra.

@jakedduck1, Good morning, Leonard. Just popping in to say hi! Are we still all walking together? We have to keep motivated. But I have to say, being curled up with a good book in a warm nest is tough to leave to go walking! Not sure what the weather is like where you are but it was -27 this morning. I think my walkeze will be indoors today! Where will you walk?

@artist01. The journal will be a great tool for incentive!! Reminds me of the old saving’s passbooks at the bank when I was a kid. Fun to watch the little amounts added over time, grow into much bigger rewards!! Thoreau will be your silent walking partner daily. Well, along with the rest of us. 😊
