Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@sueinmn I sure know what you mean by the black ice! Too bad it doesn’t have a neon color to it! Most of our ice is gone, replaced but the wind. Gusts up to 70mph! Awful, awful. But I took my walk anyway—must be a glutton for punishment. 😑. And, luckily, my little dog didn’t blow away!
Hope for better weather tomorrow!

My winds weren’t that high, that really wild, however a blustery walk here this morning at 20-30 miles a hour. Fresh air, ahh breathe! Hoping it blows all of the clouds away so I can see the “star” tonight (Jupiter and Saturn as close as they have been since 1224, I believe.

Black ice - ugly to walk on or drive on! Hate it! I have a very steep driveway and there are times I just don’t walk down it for the mail any longer at my age. Have fallen in years past, NO fun!

Oh, wisco50, How scary. Is there a nearby neighbor who you might call to walk your mail to your door?

Why did you leave silicone valley? Tired of the traffic Or didn’t wanna wait around for the big one? One of my favorite restaurants was in Berkeley called Wellingtons. The beef Wellington melted in your mouth. I don’t understand why they close all the best places.
I took my cousin to Santa Cruz back in September and I couldn’t believe how desolate the place looked. about four cars parked in front of the boardwalk I’m not one car in the lot . I think we only passed one person on the boardwalk. Of course everything was closed except one place to get something to eat. Even the candy store was closed so why would the Dream Inn be full. I did get some candy downtown however were quite expensive at least I thought it was. It was $75 a pound. I like See’s candy better & it’s only $27 a pound.
Have you ever seen the boardwalk this deserted? there were only about four cars including mine in front of the boardwalk and not one car in the parking lot. 5 or 6 on the street. The beach pic is the most crowded one. Can't find the boardwalk pic but 1 person at most.
Take care,
Jake

Oh, I don’t worry about it for just a day or two. I do have some of those things you can stretch over the bottom of your shoes that are supposed to “bite” into the ice. However what I find even better is to walk across the snow in my front yard, avoiding driveway altogether. I walk across the yard, staying on grass - though there is somewhat of a hill on other side of the yard - but not near as steep and ALL on a grassy area between my property line and side of neighboring yard. Then I can walk across the front of my property, still on grass until I’m opposite my mailbox on other side of road. I cross the plowed road, get my mail and reverse the process 🤪 However, if there’s black ice on the roads, all bets are off and the mail can just stay there!

why did I leave California? The big earthquake in 1989. I had a 2 hour commute one way to work to Hewlett-Packard, so 4 hours in my car each day. I didn't want to live in my car. I had to commute from Fremont to Cupertino, just 20 miles. I started riding my bike back and forth! I've never seen Santa Cruz like that! That is so sad! I remember jammed packed freeways and malls. I love Santa Cruz!

You are so wise with your strategy to get to the mail box safely or not when there is black ice.
Looks like sleet ice/snow/rain all a possibility today. Grey outside, however an early walk may be my only hope today.
Take care all!

Yep - Here in the Twin Cities it's so dark we have all the lights on to make us feel better! Took my walk already and it is beginning to mist - will turn to sleet then snow by afternoon. Our daughter is temporarily working from out family room as we pack her condo, and when she saw the forecast she came packed with everything she needs to stay until Christmas!

Right now it is in the low 40’s in southern WI but wind is picking up. Some sort of storm tomorrow. How much, who knows. Rain, sleet, snow, take your pick. Predicting 7 degrees by tomorrow, so guess the party is almost over!

Greetings from Duluth! It started out at 30 degrees when I got up and right on time we got blowing snow. It's wild out now and everyone is hunkered down. The temperature is steadily dropping. Minus 3 degrees is predicted for tonight. It had to happen eventually. Before this, the winter has been pretty mild.
