Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Temperatures in the 30s is a giant relief? Are you kidding? 70’s maybe.
I ran some errands and then went on a walk, longer than usual, and I didn’t think I was ever going to get home. I thought my head was going to fall off. My neck, back, sides and legs were killing me. Once I start hurting like that it’s only a matter of time that I have to sit down or I will collapse. Well I didn’t get home in time and I did collapse in the street and the nicest lady offered to drive me home but I crawled to someone's lawn and rested which I did several more times. I took a bunch of Percocet when I got home but it took several hours to be somewhat comfortable. I drug a bunch of my Christmas junk in and I wanted to start putting up my tree and decorating but that won't happen until tomorrow. No walk tomorrow!!!!!
I walked very close to 5 miles today.
Take care & bundle up. Maybe you kids that live in that horrible cold weather should get some of those clothing that heat up with batteries.
You gals take it easy and don’t freeze,
Jake

Oh my goodness, @jakedduck1, were you trying to set a marathon record????? I have hypotension and get lightheaded if I stand or walk too long at a time. Can only imagine your what you experienced with your collapse and so grateful that a good samaritan (sp) offered to give you a lift. Glad you made it home in one piece and hope you rewarded yourself with a favorite bite of chocolate????

I'm 100% on your team with comments to those walking warriors that persist despite the frigid temps. Below 70 degrees and I bundle up like an Eskimo and then reward myself with a treat if I manage to get from street mailbox back inside without frostbite. Hope the Percocet brought quick relief but have to wonder if you might have been suffering from "sugar haze" in even attempting to consider decorating the tree so soon???? Smiles and take good care of our favorite "sugar guy"!

No sugar haze, unfortunately. I've been having few sweets lately. I’ve been feasting on my pumpkin pie. It's gone now. Like losing my best friend. I have a small piece, yes small, I don’t believe it either but it's true.
I walked 2.9 miles so far today. I'm going out to make at least 3 miles. wanted to go to Home Depot but now I forgot why. I also went to get a blood test today but I already had it done last Friday. I also walked up three flights of stairs while I was there. I very seriously considered eating a payday today but I fought off that desire.
I had an apple and a half of an Asian pear. I love those things but they’re so expensive. About nine dollars at Costco for five. 9 PM here guess I better go around the block two or three times.
Take care,
Jake

Be thankful you didi not eat that Payday. I loved them as a child, but they have changed. We made a stop on one of our road trips (remember those?) and my husband purchased a Payday. He ate a bit and then we had to pull over. He vomited that awful candy bar. No more of those for either of us. Your apple and Asian pear sound much better. @joybringer1

Beautiful day! Sunny and in the 40’s. But, true to Colorado, everything is brown. Had a nice walk with hubby and dog and now have to get busy. I’ve organized a Covid cookie swap for a small group in the park. Wonder if @jakedduck1 wants to join us! How about it, Leonard!

how are you doing?!? Long time no chat! I am back. I was in the hospital, all better now. I have a 50+ year old toy, a pig, with cookies printed on the side, did you see it?

Missed my walk today to make a 450 mile road trip to stock up on a winter's worth of sausage and pork for the family. It was awesome to see different sights - beautiful hoarfrost on the trees in northern MN.

So you been in the hospital have you. If I remember correctly, which I wouldn't bet the farm on, your in the the east now aren't you?
You were probably in the hospital for hypothermia and frostbite. I'm a mega whimp in the cold. Are you doing okay now? The last two hospitals I was there and I asked him if I could stay longer because I enjoyed their food so much. I told them you might as well keep me because if I go home to my cooking I’ll know I’ll end up here anyway. I was in San Francisco in September and what a depressing mess. Nothing like I remember it being. It was once such a beautiful city. I wanted to take my cousin to the Cliffhouse but it was closed up right. when we went down to Santa Cruz. We only passed a couple people walking along the boardwalk it was all locked up too. I never saw so few cars there. There’s two really good candy stores there. One was closed and the other I paid $75 a lb. Admittedly it was good but not $75 a pound good.
What are you studying in school?
How long till you get your degree?
I went to a couple of the big box stores and the grocery store today and walked and walked. Ended up forgetting where I parked my car so I walked a half a mile trying to find my car. I ended up walking right past it and not even noticing it. I must be getting old.
stay healthy kid,
Jake
