Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Yes I agree, the temps in the 30s has been a giant relief. I have walked everyday, sometimes as much as a hour because I know that the frigid temps will eventually slow me down. Everyone is cheerful and waves or a brief hello ... are all welcome. I have stayed close to home, still cleaning out and organizing. Yes, I am tired of it, however it feels so good when I can cross one more thing off my list.
Time spent giving on Tuesday when donations were doubled and one even tripled also lifted my spirits.
The sky has also excited me, as the stars will come closer and closer and on the 21st they will look like a Christmas star, shedding a bright light of hope and peace.

Temperatures in the 30s is a giant relief? Are you kidding? 70’s maybe.
I ran some errands and then went on a walk, longer than usual, and I didn’t think I was ever going to get home. I thought my head was going to fall off. My neck, back, sides and legs were killing me. Once I start hurting like that it’s only a matter of time that I have to sit down or I will collapse. Well I didn’t get home in time and I did collapse in the street and the nicest lady offered to drive me home but I crawled to someone's lawn and rested which I did several more times. I took a bunch of Percocet when I got home but it took several hours to be somewhat comfortable. I drug a bunch of my Christmas junk in and I wanted to start putting up my tree and decorating but that won't happen until tomorrow. No walk tomorrow!!!!!
I walked very close to 5 miles today.
Take care & bundle up. Maybe you kids that live in that horrible cold weather should get some of those clothing that heat up with batteries.
You gals take it easy and don’t freeze,
Jake

@jakedduck1. I'm with you. 70s is the ideal temperature for walking. I have been wearing two pairs of pants on my walk and I live in Southern California! 5 miles is alot, I haven't done that in many moons. I hope you are feeling better now, take care and be careful, no more walk till you drop please.

Sometimes my neck hurts from walking as it obviously moves around. It was making lots of noise yesterday. Snap, pop, crackle and crunching. I hate the crunchy noises. Occasionally I yelp!

Well, my walking plan changed yesterday - in a delightful way. My husband cannot tolerate the cold, but it was 40 yesterday so he joined me and we walked for a whole hour - slower than my usual pace, but wonderful to have company and observe our neighborhood.

Last night we had Zoom Happy Hour with friends (for 3 hours!) and one couple shared their walking strategy - they put a talk of interest to both on his phone, he turns on a tiny Bluetooth speaker and they walk the cart paths in the local golf course. After the talk, they can chat about it.

Today I'll do my vigorous walk, scouting for Christmas displays in a nearby neighborhood, then it's football in my sewing room and steak on the smoker grill for dinner.

Thanks @joybringer1 & @jakeduck1 - necessity is the mother of invention, they say. I couldn't be at my Mom's 24/7 so I tried to figure stuff out to help her. It helped a lot that I participated in a lot of her early post-stroke PT & OT sessions, so I watched some of the clever strategies those angels used to make life easier. And my family cared for elder relatives and friends through my whole life, often with limited resources, so we had to make up solutions on the spot.

I wouldn’t have thought about walking the golf/cart course. We are all looking for new places to walk. Love the description of your Sunday and topping it off with yummy food. Enjoy!

There was another big brush fire a couple of days ago with high wind, woke up smelling smoke inside the house. The air outside was smoky. Thousands evacuated again. Fortunately it is under control now. Been walking short distances, hip, back and leg pain still bother me. Then I had a back spasm for five days... Still there! If anyone can invent something that can help apply topical pain reliever to areas in the back hands cannot reach, there's a fortune to be made! Looking forward to PT Monday.

@mayofeb2020, Makes me sad to hear each report of the many wildfires happening across our nation and the thousands of families displaced as a result. Glad yours was brought under control and that you are safe.

I recently recovered from yet another one of those dreadful from neck to ankle very painful times caused by an earlier back injury that continues to flare up and put me totally out of commission until slow healing occurs. I use a very soft bristle back brush from Bed Bath & Beyond to slather on the topical pain relievers for those impossible to reach back areas. I use a second one to apply body lotion mixed with a bit of Aloe Baby Gel or Avon's Skin So Soft during the exceptionally skin drying winter months. Following a shower they bring PURE relief and soak in quickly. Hope your PT Monday speeds your healing!
