Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I tried the Peloton app on my smart TV when it was free for 90 days during quarantine last Spring. By the way and because I didn't know before then, the Peloton app has more than cycling if you don't own their bike! They have tons of different kinds of workouts to choose from including floor, weights, abs, etc. The group I am doing now uses Facebook. Being outdoors plus getting in a workout is ideal though but some of us need to adapt to winter temps and weather!

Thanks for the info. much appreciated. Do you have a Peleton bike, if so how do you like it?
I did 2 mile walk around the lake here this morning in 28 degrees, it was good since there wasn’t any wind.

@fiesty76 Boy, I’m on a real roll here—I’ve had 2 really good days in a row! Even got out for walks. Today was just gorgeous but chilly but my brain wasn’t working right so I felt like I was on a rocking boat on the ocean. 🥺. It’s going to take awhile to work up to my 3 miles/day. Who else is still walking. @fiesty76 @lioness @mayofeb2020 @sueinmn @jude07? @amandajro , I haven’t really thought about winter exercises. I know I’ll miss my classes at the rec center, but... I usually keep walking unless it’s icy.

Good for You, @becsbuddy! Two good days in a row is super news and walks to boot....No holdin' a great gal down!

This morning I had a CAT lung scan which I was nervous about going for. Talked with the nurse beforehand and expressed my concerns because of the pandemic. She assured me that the machine was cleaned after each patient and scheduled me for the first scan of the day. Was in and out in maybe 20 minutes and relieved to have it behind me. Drove to Drug Emporium for some personal supplies and it turned into a a nice morning walk along the sidewalks in the shopping center. Most people going in & coming out of various stores were wearing city mandated masks but there were those who weren't. It was a chilly morning here as well but without wind, I enjoyed some window shopping.

I walked nearly 1 mile today.
I tried to eat just one white chocolate macadamia nut cookie as my reward but fortunately I wasn't successful.

@jakedduck1, I can't pretend to cover the distance you, @becsbuddy and others manage but salute you "younun's" for your energy. As for "trying to eat just one and not succeeding", at least you had the thought and we can't excel at all things all of the time, right? Smiles I mean...just one cookie...????

Jeepers 28°, I need another blanket just reading that. I would freeze mid-stride for sure.
It was 60° here today and I thought that was cold. I guess the California winters aren’t as brutal as I thought.
Take care,
Jake

Jake - Here in MN we would call you a wimp. I take my little grands (2 & 4 1/2 yo) out to play every day while Mommy works to burn off energy. Even I have warm snowpants to wear. The last 2 days, with temps in the 20's we have run & played in the snow for close to an hour. Today we will probably limit to 20 minutes as the temp is 12F. Their parents have them outfitted with wonderful, warm & waterproof clothing from head to toe. It takes about 15 minutes to get them ready with all the pieces!
My task this weekend is to make kid-sized fleece neck gaiter/masks for when it gets even colder.
Off to put on my "long johns"
- happy walking everyone, whatever the temperature.

Yes, my attitude definitely has a big role in whether I keep walking in these temps or not. It’s not always easy, believe me. I would rather have 60 degrees! Enjoy

No doubt about it, I am indeed a wimp when it comes to the cold. I'm bundled up like an Eskimo and others are in shorts and t shirts, Burrrrr!
I'm waiting for it to warm up before my walk.
I read walking for 75 minutes a week can add 2 years to your life.
Stay warm,
Jake, aka wimpy

That’s interesting. I walk at least 5 hours a week so I am aiming for age 104 while I repose peacefully on my sofa after having my last glass of wine and hopefully the grilled octopus plate to go along with it.....and dark chocolate...forever.

Seriously it is November and we are still in the 80s...only consolation is the humidity is going down....one dew point at a time. So my beginning daily walk is really nice but I start to feel less energetic on the way back. Since I am on the west coast of Florida we got inundated with rain on Wednesday and cleaned up a lot of debris. Lucky to dodge a hurricane this season though (which is still not officially over) and lucky we personally had no flooding.
Rooting for cooler temps next week. Keep on walking Leonard...there’s not one part of your body that does not benefit from that.

I don’t post much on this thread because my walk is generally boring unless I meet up with someone and see an occasional deer or armadillo or wild turkey.
I do like to see what people are throwing out on garbage days lol.

This might be dumb question but how does one do this/connect on virtual walk?

I walked over 2 miles yesterday looking at cars and 2.5 miles today. I didnt even take any candy with me and only had 1 cookie yesterday and 1 today.
I know, I don’t believe it either.
Happy trails,
Jake
