Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Hugest temp not hugest haha
@jude07 I will keep you posted! I'm on Week 1 Day 3 but do really feel motivated by the trainers even though it is virtual. More to come!
I have continued to walk, it was a good temp yet on Monday so I did 3+ miles, today’s was shorter with about 2 miles. I hope to keep moving some outside and continue my floor exercises when I first get up. I hope it doesn’t get too icy because that will prevent me from taking the risk of falling. Other than that, I hope to push on.
@becsbuddy
I walked nearly 1 mile today.
I tried to eat just one white chocolate macadamia nut cookie as my reward but fortunately I wasn't successful.

@jakedduck1. As my Chinese ancestor say, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step! You are on the way to 1000 miles, when you hit that milestone, I will airmail you a pound of macadamia nut cookies. You have my word on this!
@amandajro I’ve not tried an online group—I didn’t know they existed! I’ve done some of the YouTube classes, though.
Do you hav a favorite class or group?
My daughter does one of those - she did really well for about 2 months - I'm not there every day now, so not sure how she's keeping up. Getting out with the little boys every day keeps me moving - today we played tag in the snow, which always ends with me getting gang tackled.

I tried the Peloton app on my smart TV when it was free for 90 days during quarantine last Spring. By the way and because I didn't know before then, the Peloton app has more than cycling if you don't own their bike! They have tons of different kinds of workouts to choose from including floor, weights, abs, etc. The group I am doing now uses Facebook. Being outdoors plus getting in a workout is ideal though but some of us need to adapt to winter temps and weather!
We have been Mayo patients a long time. Barbara/Gordon Evans - Gordon's feet are very restless at night, sleep affected? Suggestions?
@duchess11, I know this problem well. Restless legs and/or feet often keep me from sleeping too and can even wake me out of a deep sleep. I find that targeted stretching before bed. Sometimes I have to get up in the middle of the night to stretch, which I really don't like. My mom finds that heat helps her.
