Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@ellens, I know at the time this was no laughing matter but the way you tell the story has me laughing out loud. What a way to be awakened in the night!!! Glad your parents knew what to do but I can only imagine a small child waking up to her their whispers!!! Too funny!

I'm glad you enjoyed my saga of the pinworms. I think that part of me knew what they were doing but the other part of me just went back to sleep. Anyway, it was explained to me in the AM. I was just like Oh, OK.

No power for hours, electric company had to replace old worn equipment. Not a fun day. Hot hot hot.
Backyard had ash, not sure what fire it was from. Orange moon and sun. Still cleaning from Wolsey Fire, and now fires all around California, Oregon and parts of Washington State.
I think the latest paint color should be called SOOT, with a darker version called ASH.
Who ever thought keeping white walls clean would be such a chore?

I experienced something I named the Chicago Wall Syndrome. Ages ago, during my first marriage, my husband and I lived in a newly painted (white) apartment in Hyde Park. After a couple of years I noticed a spot on the living room wall and cleaned it off and then noticed how gray all the rest of the wall had become from coal soot and other nasty pollution. I cleaned wider and wider and finally gave up. Hence the Chicago Wall Syndrome. It can apply to places other than Chicago.

@cindyjk Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect, Cindy. So glad you could join us. I am sorry to hear about your stage lV lung cancer. Is this your motivation for walking with us? How is the weather where you live? Is it still extremely hot or are you getting some reprieve from summer? Would also love to know your back story.

Thank you, I'm happy to be joining the group. The weather is cold at the moment, I'm hoping my plants don't freeze tonight!! I've been dealing with cancer for over 3 years now. They removed my upper left lobe about 2.5 years ago and thought I was good to go. Turns out I was not, ended up being diagnosed a year later with stage lV. I have the ROS1 driver so I am on a targeted therapy drug. It seems to be doing a fine job, but I just had to have surgery last week because one spot was not listening to is order to vacate. How about you? (I have a lot of restrictions while I heal and walking is something I can do!!)

@funcountess and @lioness
I wish I could send my California buddies some of our afternoon thunderstorms....well just the rain part. Possible flooding this weekend in some spots in my area here in Florida. The upside is that it cools off and is better in the mornings for walking.
We have seen tv reports and pictures and the devastation to homes.
This is a year that will take up a whole semester of study in school for future generations.

As always stay vigilant and safe
FL Mary
