Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I feel the same about shooting animals/birds. I know some people eat venison and elk meat but I could never shoot one and I don't want to see any carcasses in the backs of pickups. I have gradually gotten so I don't eat mammals. For me, it's the yuk factor. I still eat some chicken and fish but I don't like to deal with raw chicken at all (Salmonella farms).
@sueinmn yes, Detroit Lakes is not too far away (1 1/2 hr). I agree with you to pass on traveling to the Bemidji area as taking too many risks while traveling is not a good idea. I live in the woods about 15 miles north of town and it’s very pretty in the summer. Unfortunately, I cannot represent our chamber of commerce because I do NOT like winter! ❄️❄️❄️
@wisco50, Yes! Walleyes and how delicious!!!! Thank you. I was about to do a search for MN lake fish...thx for saving me the time!
You are very welcome! I haven't started a lot of the things that you enjoyed here. I live above Leif Erikson Park and the wonderful Rose Garden, so I often walk down the hill to those places and can scramble down to be next to the water. It's hypnotic, a good trade-off for the mountains I enjoyed in MT. Duluth is the most climate-change resistant city in the US according to the NYT. because of the Big Lake.
I know lots of people love both fishing for and eating walleye! You’re welcome!
@susandenise, My goodness, you truly do define the term "daily warrior". Thank you so much for being an animal rescue good samaritan for so many left behind, sometimes ill and injured, cats and dogs. A good friend in San Fransisco does the same for feral cats in Golden Gate Park. That alone is a full time "volunteer" avocation. That you also live on a self sufficient farm spells another full time job. And then there are also those children who require 24/7 attention, meals and care. Another "super achiever" joins the ranks of so many others in these Connect forums who keep going forward despite their chronic pain and daily challenges. I am certainly not one of those but can stand to the sidelines with nothing but admiration for what you and they determine to do. I don't have RA and absolutely no medical background but a close friend does and I know it took visits to several docs before she found one who could help her. No idea what might be causing the large lower leg swelling but would encourage you to seek a consultation with a different doctor who could treat you for that. Sending you best wishes and hope you are remembering to also practice some good self-care.
@ellens,@wisco50,@sueinmn, It was great fun to reminisce about our time in Duluth and explorations which opened a whole new world to me as a young adult. I do have to confess that the annual 14 months (lol) of severe winter and snow with what I remember of what seemed like only 3-4 weeks, of glorious summer-fall were enough to last me a lifetime. very big grin (vbg) P.S. Sometimes there is an advantage to those 3 am treks to the bathroom! Remembered this morning that the pies I made were Rhubarb. Thank goodness, that along with the walleyes that you recalled would have niggled at my poor brain for days. Today is another walking day for me and I think I'll try to estimate how many of those fantastic tiny strawberries it might have taken to produce one pint-quart of preserves! Best to all.
@migizii, I couldn't have been a poster girl for Duluth either for the very same reason as yours! Just the thought of those hundreds of inches of Duluth's accumulated annual snow has me gravitating toward the thermostat and we are having another run of 100 + temps here again. I used to say that I'd be one of those little old ladies dressed like an Eskimo with the heater up to 90 degrees in winter. Yep, I'm now that gal and run to raise the thermostat at the first hint of "cold on the way".
Thank you! I hurt. My husband works out if town 7a-7p mon-sat., so it’s me alone Innagony. I do appreciate your comments . Sometimes I feel it’s all in vain. I have been to 4 doctors already. The last one, the second RA I’ve seen finally figured it out since all the others said it’s “
In my head”, put me on benzodiazepines and sedatives. I was dismayed and mad! I’m a nurse ( was) so I cried and cried. Anyway.. woe is me....
I do have to find out what the lower left leg swelling is.. I’m guessing my heart has just had enough and the RA is affecting it also. Funtimes!! IM SICK OF IT ALL...
As a retired RN, I agree, you need to find out why your leg is swelling. Doesn’t sound good and as you know, NOT normal. Why would a rheumatologist put you on such meds for RA? I don’t get it. As a female patient who was essentially written off as “it’s all in your head”, how angry that makes me is beyond words. Yes, it was all in my head - my jaw joints to be specific! Since I got artificial joints in 2009, I’ve not had any jaw joint pain! TG I finally found a medical/dental specialist who understood and LISTENED!
