Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@fiesty76 How are you ? Did the hurricane affect you any? Thought of you today.

@lioness, Thank you, Linda. Today was another "sr only" Walmart day...few items and fewer shoppers. The old fashioned "under the tongue" thermometer I've been using for years is hard for me to read now. I asked a pharmacy clerk if they carried a "touchless therm" and she led me to the area and said you are in luck. We can't keep these in stock. There were 4 so I lucked out for sure.

Noticed that there were many more empty spots on the shelves I shopped and with the rise in virus numbers here wonder if others are buying more for back-ups.

Because there were so few shoppers, I sincerely hope the store will continue this once/week hour for those of us who are more cautious. That will count as my walk today because I'm still running a low grade temp...think it is from tooth infection/partial extraction but feeling less zip than usual. Tomorrow morning is early Quest Diag. lab and afternoon is ff-up for decision about remaining tooth root. If a temp at both places, might be turned away.

No, living in West Texas we have tornado concerns but thankfully not the hurricane threats that damage so many coastal areas of our country. Got a chuckle out of your remark to Leonard. Take care.

A retina specialist told me I had macular degeneration to but fortunately it’s very mild doesn’t really affect my vision so I notice.
I’ll take an earthquake over a hurricane any day although I do love wind. But I’ve never been in
hurricane speed winds before i’ve never been in a serious earthquake either but I did watch my wall crack from one end to the other during the Loma Prieta earthquake and a piece of plaster fell out of an archway. If you’re going to go no need to go kicking and screaming might as well enjoy it to the end you might not get another opportunity.
I had to run lots of errands today so I’m gonna count that as part of my walking but come evening I may build up enough courage for a short walk.
Take care all you walking fanatics,
Jake
PS....Don’t forget to take along a candy bar.

What a frightening thought. One I’m eager to get out of my mind FOREVER!! Your statement just goes to show things could always be worse.

@jakeduck1 I am so sorry that someone gave you a frightening thought. I hope you can work through it and get it out of your mind forever! Sometimes people say things they shouldn't. My husband is one of them. Take care and I hope you feel better. If it gets bad you could see a counselor, but I think you are a strong man and can handle it yourself.

@jakedduck1.. Be careful Jake, if you fall, the guy may have to give you mouth to mouth, oh, I get it, that's why you want the young blonde to walk you out!!

@jakeduck1 I see the post I think may have upset you. I think it may be a joke, but not a funny one. I can see why you got upset over it. Be strong and let it go. I know you can do it.

What post are you referring to? I’m not at all upset.

@lioness. I have dry eyes too. My opthomologist is pretty conservative in her approach to meds. She thinks eye drops would do the trick. She mentioned years ago that if I'm taking diruetic in my bp meds, it may dry my eyes up, do you take any meds with diruetics?
