Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@fiesty76 @funcountess Next day it was gone . Yesterday I did my 35 min of exercise forgot I had zoom exercise an hour later in afternoon so did them today not doing anything it is gone again so its every other day seems like . I did get rid of the pain I had in legs from one area . This is just what I did for me My chiropractor told me about the activator She used it instead of her hands to release the knots in muscles so I used it on my back and pain gone so happy . I bought one and use it every once in awhile and for me it works . I think getting rid of pain will bring your energy back .

So far this week, two really great walks - Sunday with my friend in our regional park - very busy but people were good about distancing. Yesterday in the neighborhood - saw a lady working in her garden, stopped to compliment her & got an ipromptu garden tour and made a new friend.
Today, I'll be dodging raindrops, so probably 2-3 shorter walks. My fitness tracker decided to quit on me yesterday, but it's still under warranty so I'm waiting for a new one in the mail.

@lionness You are way ahead of me, but of course I'm still recovering. I did walk 4 blocks yesterday. My knees hurt this morning, probably because I haven't walked that far for a long time.
I didn't sleep very well last night and very tired this morning. It's going to take time to heal from the big back surgery. I was really hurting this morning. I got off of Oxycodone yesterday. The tramadol helped with my pain this morning, but the surgeon wants me to get off of it too.
Have been depressed since I have come home from seeing my one month checkup. I cry so easy and really miss my dog, even though shes in a good place and I would not be able to take care of her. Still have to wear my brace and no bending, twisting, or lifting anything heavy. My husband has really been busy doing ever everythingI use to do. I did get a load of towels in the washer yesterday. My husband put them in the dryer, but with my streacher (SP) I got them out and folded them
Keep up the good exercise, I will get there one of theses days, may take a year. Jeanie Lily was my dogs name.

@lilypaws You have a good excuse ,your recovery from surgery don't do to much now or your hurt yourself . Listen to the Dr. No bending, stretching or twisting . I can't do as much twisting since my fracture in 05 I guess I'm just afraid too I know its healed but still don't want to . You be careful and bless your husband .

@sueinmn I had ordered one but the delivery from where I ordered it is really bad with these times we have so will have to look at Amazon or Walmart those are the only two I can depend on right now . I guess all I did yesterday isn't going to count for today so have to keep the tack master happy and go out today

@lilypaws please don't be too hard on yourself. You had a major surgery. Just take it slow, one day at a time. Listen to your body. If it gives you too much pain, maybe you can ease off a little. Nobody expects you to run a marathon. Thank goodness your husband can help. One day you will look back and marvel at how well you recover. Right now, take care. I'm sorry about your dog, maybe you can face time with the new owner and see your dog that way. Talk to your doctor about the pain. Maybe there's something else he can prescribe that's less additive than oxy.

@lioness. How did you get rid of the pain? Can you show me? My back and legs are sore all the time. It took all my strength to walk every day. What kind of activator do you use? Can you share and where did you get it? A ton of questions, sorry, but I am desperate!

@lilypaws, Jeanie, a 4 block walk after your major surgery sounds impressive to say the least! I'm sure you are greatly missing your dog but maybe you'll be up for a visit with her before long? Can't remember if she is being boarded now are if you placed her in a new permanent home?

Glad your husband is helping. Always think it is an ok thing when husbands/dads pitch in on tasks which wives/moms usually do. Creates a new awareness, yes? Smiles

@lioness, Yep! Kinda' like my short term memory, my energy comes and goes of its on accord these days! Glad the activator helped your back pain. Pain is the fastest energy squasher there is.

@mayofeb2020 My chiropractor used it and ordered it for me I think you should see your chiropractor about one I don't know where he got it but I was under his care also not knowing what your pain is from you should check with your Dr. Mine is from compound fractures so depends what is causing your pain
