Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@sbesbuddy Hi Becky. I don't know if you got the message I sent. I started walking and started with 2 blocks and went 3 blocks yesterday. I have to be careful since I'm still recovering from the 9 hour back surgery. I go to Mayo to see my surgeon for my post-op visit. I hope all is ok. I woke up this morning with pain across my L-4 & L-5, where I had the nerves being pinched. I love my surgeon, he was the best to do my surgery. Your friend Jeanie

@fiesty76 Thank you fiesty76 I was hurting this morning across my low back L-4 and L5, wear I had the nerve being pinch and the surgeon had to do a lot of work to get the nerves unpinched. Remember my surgery was 9 hours. Yes, walking is what they want me to do, but I wonder if I went too far yesterday. I did 3 blocks. I'm going to see how I feel today and may just do 2 blocks. But my pain pills are taking some of the pain away.
I go to Mayo tomorrow and have my post-op visit with the surgeon.

@lilypaws, Hi, Jeanie, Maybe you can tell the doc at your appointment about the 3 blocks and how you felt afterwards and can be given more specific guidelines about how long or far to walk in starting that again? I'm learning to listen more closely to what my "body is telling me" now with some efforts. If you walked 2 instead of 3 blocks today, can you feel a difference once home again? Hope you let us know how the post-op visit goes...do you have any questions ready to take with you to ask? I write mine down beforehand because otherwise I am a bit anxious and tend to forget what to ask.

I was told (and could feel) a lot of the pain after my back surgery (multiple levels) was due to muscle spasms. With hardware placed in my back, muscles were being placed into positions they hadn’t been in years, hence spasms. I had meds for muscle spasms as well as pain meds. Ice helped a lot, too.

I hope everything goes well tomorrow. It sounds like you have great faith in your surgeon and take your time at you follow up getting further guidance on how to proceed with your recovery. You are so very brave!

@wisco50 I,m glad the ice is helping for me it is a live saver When I fractured my back the shower and hot water felt good and helped a lot . I use ice when needed then heat afterwards the Dr. told me and it does help . I never had surgery only my bypass but still ice and heat are my goto items for relief

If my back or neck muscles feel tight, heat and self massage or even just point pressure can help. Ice is best for actual aching or spasms. Years ago I had severe jaw problems and used ice almost constantly. I also played soccer as an adult into my early 50’s and have an impressive pile of different cold/hot packs, LOL!

Yep! @lioness, I've experienced that too hot rice smell, too! While I find the heat more comforting, I know the ice is what is recommended for best aid. My p.t. advised me to alternate the heat and cold after 7 fractures with using the ice longer.

Morning @lilypaws . I’m glad you’re doing so well with your recovery! No time to waste! I too my dog out today and we actually had a good walk even if we had to stop at every blade of grass!. I love to listen to the birds and keep looking for creatures in the undergrowth. Never found any, thank heavens!

@becsbuddy and others, Today my walk took place in my 2nd Walmart visit. Longer shopping today and more about the adventure later. More frig foods to bring inside than the 1st trip and beyond safely retrieving a slice of bakery sock-it-to-me-cake as a reward after the complete garage clothing/shoe strip and shower/shampoo, that was nearly more than I could manage for one morning. Your dog stopping to check out each blade of grass reminds me of those similar and sometimes frustrating walks my dog and I enjoyed. Thanks for the smile.
