Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I walked this morning. Didn't want to. I did it because I knew that it would make me feel good all day long and sleep well tonight!
Anybody else get a walk or activity today?

@rosemmarya, Always think double stars are added when we have to give ourselves an extra push to get started on something we'd rather delay. Good for you for taking that walk today! Yup, I also walked early and then dug, composted and transplanted some liriope.

@rosemarya This morning i was out chopping blackberry vines and dead madrone. The large cart my husband fashioned for me took off down the hill, even after I blocked a wheel. How dare it! Down the hill, staying on the sidewalk til hitting the corner, then off into gutter and spill contents. It's a dead end street, so no issue of getting into traffic. What to do? Make lemonade! Uprighted the cart and continued my chopping down there. It was already 1.5 hrs into my 2 hr shift limit. Boy, was it a long and steep hike back up. More gutter cleanup and weeding tomorrow in the early morning coolness.

Hi, all. I confess, I didn’t go for a real walk today. I had my rituxan infusion this morning and then decided I’d better take it easy. Poor excuse! But, tomorrow’s another day! Sounds like everyone is doing very well! Promise I’ll try!

@lioness and @imallears, I am glad that both your states are now making a simple facial covering mandatory. How I wish that would be the case in TX! An older friend from New Mexico says people there are traveling here to eat out and for entertainment. Her gov. or mayor? has recently lifted the restriction on restaurant in-dining with partial capacity and she and two friends have dined out twice. Next day, a much younger friend called from her small Oklahoma town in which there is a large meat packing plant. She reported that her town of 10,000 was listed as 3rd in the state for virus diagnoses but that she and her hubby have observed Covid guideline since the outset. Their closest larger city for shopping and docs is nearby Amarillo, TX where there has been a large upsurge in virus numbers, primarily due to a large Tyson meat packing company.

I think most of us were hoping that the summer would see a slow down in the numbers and spread of the pandemic; guess we were hoping for a slight reprieve before the onslaught of this year's fall flue season combined with Covid. Simple steps that all could take but continue to ignore prolongs the spread and guarantees more illness from this deadly virus. I am both deeply angered and bewildered by those who defy reason by continuing to flaunt their own and their loved ones safety.

I liked Jon Stewart’s comments about face masks. He discussed that if the people who refuse to wear masks have surgery, then they should tell the doctors to take off their masks when operating on them as “there is no reason for it”

Hi,
I’m exhausted just reading your post. Walked just under 2 miles in this heat and came back with sweaty eyeballs again. Left at 7:15 which is late for me. Saw a cardinal and our CA biker as usual . He was biking next to a friend of ours who jogs and I know prefers to jog alone because it’s hard to talk and jog at the same time. We have a runner who is now walking instead in the morning...that’s how uncomfortable the humidity is. I can’t see how some of these runners do so in the afternoon when it’s 93 degrees.
But...seeing less people than a month ago
God bless all the AC repairmen in Florida! Oh, and now we are expecting massive dust clouds from the Sahara desert to drift over the Atlantic Ocean do should see some haze around.

Well, @lioness, I'm with Humana, too, but no masks yet in the mail. I know each plan is different and I'm glad your plan has sent you some "freebies"! I finally ordered two masks and pkg of filters from Etsy. I still have some hospital masks from an earlier purchase and wear a scarf on walks and in the front yard...just in case. Looking forward to trying on the new ones and hope they will be comfortable and easy to breathe through.

I get my masks in Florida at Ace Hardware. They have N95 masks with a pocket, like a duck and they are great to breathe in! I bought enough so that I use one, and then put it in the sun to "refresh it" after use.

I walk on Mickler's Landing beach area every day, about a 2 mile turnaround from home to beach. Should I be wearing a mask while I walk? Just curious what people think. NO ONE on the beach is wearing masks.
