Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Here’s what I saw at our deer feeder shortly after mowing. They come every year and raise their babies in our back yard. So fun to watch.

They are Sand Hill Cranes. Can get to be 7’ tall! I think they are so fun to watch.

@imallers I'm so glad to hear mask are mandatory there they are here but it makes me so mad to see those people without them . Don't understand why they won't . It is warm here today about 85 but the sun is relentless . So hot when not a breeze . Stay in and be careful . I'm doing fine .

Hi,
Makes me mad also to see people not wearing masks. My idea of staying in is going to 3 weekly gym classes, stores (mostly food),
bank and post office twice a week for my daughters business PO Box, and visiting a select few friends. Believe me pre Covid there was rarely a day I was home so this is my idea of a mini lockdown. My daughter gets tested every 2 weeks now as it is mandated. She is having my son in law tested tomorrow because they don’t do that in the sheriffs department. She had my granddaughter tested because she is out and about at times and she is okay.

My son, daughter in law and 2 grandsons who are in Orlando are being tested Sunday because they have been hearing of friends in their circle who are getting sick. My son closed down his office again...he was only letting a few in at a time and he mostly works from home now. My other grandson in Orlando has been going to in person art classes...finished his online classes and is looking for part time work. They mandated masks in Orlando before we did. He is good about not going out too much. Our governor still won’t mandate masks statewide...he is a Republican and very political so the individual counties and cities are doing it.

Going to try to get back to the 2.5 mile walk tomorrow.
Glad you are okay and I, so far, feel very good and have more energy these past few days for some reason despite the heat.

I don’t think anyone would mind this joke....Do you know why the President doesn’t need glasses? He has 2020.

I am with you, I don't understand why people just won't wear masks. My daughter is in Orlando as well and has some health conditions that put her at risk. Good that your family is getting tested and the results, thus far, are in their favor. I am missing my social time and have spent so much time in my flower beds that I'm afraid that I may be talking to them and don't even don't it. My walks each day are heavenly - time to free my mind.

It's that a family of herons? We had one sit on the dock of the lake house we rented least weekend. They are huge!

@imallers I liked that joke . Glad to hear you are listening to the Mayors. Our Gov is D. and started to tell us about the covid virus early and steps we needed to take . Since we opened I ,ve seen a rise and wish he would shut some business down again, but I fear that would bring on a riot . R's stick together . Voting in Nov. is most important . I did go out today for my walk and checked on the beets growing , they are doing well and tomatoes ,people here started in the planters that are here . Stay safe .

@jocelynk, Oh my word! Another wildlife specie I've never come this close to seeing in a "friend's backyard". How safe they must feel to rear their new family each year on your property. Photos are the "next best thing to being 'there'! Thanks for sharing.

@lioness and @imallears, I am glad that both your states are now making a simple facial covering mandatory. How I wish that would be the case in TX! An older friend from New Mexico says people there are traveling here to eat out and for entertainment. Her gov. or mayor? has recently lifted the restriction on restaurant in-dining with partial capacity and she and two friends have dined out twice. Next day, a much younger friend called from her small Oklahoma town in which there is a large meat packing plant. She reported that her town of 10,000 was listed as 3rd in the state for virus diagnoses but that she and her hubby have observed Covid guideline since the outset. Their closest larger city for shopping and docs is nearby Amarillo, TX where there has been a large upsurge in virus numbers, primarily due to a large Tyson meat packing company.

I think most of us were hoping that the summer would see a slow down in the numbers and spread of the pandemic; guess we were hoping for a slight reprieve before the onslaught of this year's fall flue season combined with Covid. Simple steps that all could take but continue to ignore prolongs the spread and guarantees more illness from this deadly virus. I am both deeply angered and bewildered by those who defy reason by continuing to flaunt their own and their loved ones safety.

@lioness, While I have enjoyed taking photos most of my life, I never learned how to upload or share them on the computer. I'm way behind on technology, smiles! Don't know if this link will work but here are some 'net pics of similar baby "mockies" like saw on my walk.

So, today I did a 2 mile walk and started out at 6:45. My upper lip and eyeballs were sweating. Only saw 2 dog walkers and our intrepid CA biker. Stopped to chat briefly. His sneakers are bolted to the pedals ...you can slide the shoes off. His bike has gps.
Told him he had nice legs for an old guy lol. He really is fit looking and I wish my legs looked that good. That’s the only wildlife I saw today and I am used to seeing deer, turtles, turkeys and herons in the cooler weather.

There is pressure on our governor to state mandate masks but I doubt he will. One of our big counties is handing out free masks at libraries because their mandate starts at 5 pm tonight. Mandate or not there are those who simply won’t wear one.

Hope there are no hurricanes this season and people have to go to shelters or go out of state as some do. And then there is the panic buying.

I don’t like living in the top 3 infectious states but glad that I was not still in NY when they got hit.
Heat index today up to 110 degrees....that’s deadly.
