Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@athoub I really understand what you said, “sometimes the people around don’t understand your situation.” We often refer to these as “invisible diseases.” Were as sick as other people but don’t necessarily look sick. And that leads into “upset that you are not the same person as before the surgery.” I said that exact thing to my doctor this morning! I’ll just have to keep working on it.
@athoub. Are you pleased with your liver transplant? Has it given you a new lease on life?
@lilypaws, Glad to hear you are home and recovering, Jeanie. Sounds like the surgery was long and the hospital stay longer than you'd planned. I am so glad you have pain medication to help speed your ease and recovery. Had you been diagnosed with low blood pressure before your surgery? I ask because I have both high and low b.p. and know too well that sudden weak, dizzy feeling. I've been lucky not to pass out but it can be scary when it occurs. Did they prescribe anything for your hypotension? My cardio told me to stop my high b.p. med, Amlodipine, until my pressure became more normal again. I can't remember how far you traveled for the surgery? You must have been so happy to be home again and back in your very own bed. Not much rest in hospitals for sure. Will you have to do a lot of frequent p.t.?
@imallears, Mary, I'm sorry you have a family friend with COVID. So far, that hasn't happened for me but it will surely be only a matter of time because like you in FL, TX is hitting daily new record highs for the infection and hospitalizations. Our friends in CA and also AZ are also in hot spots for COVID as well as high temps. Our gov. is one who was quick to reopen and still is not enforcing the wearing of masks. His latest was: If you don't have to go out, stay home...far more worried about economy than public health endangerment! I'm taking early morning walks because our temps are in the high 90s by noon.
@becsbuddy and other walkers, Yesterday on my early walk I saw two baby mockingbirds, our TX state bird, just learning how to get around on the ground. I just stopped to watch and in a few moments one was able to get up enough steam to fly back into the nest above. I'd never before seen a baby fly back into its nest. Is that common? One of the parents started "talking" to the other fledgling and that one made a couple of false starts before hopping over to the shelter of some shrubs. Great start to my day!
Here’s what I saw at our deer feeder shortly after mowing. They come every year and raise their babies in our back yard. So fun to watch.
Where is this? What are they?
It's that a family of herons? We had one sit on the dock of the lake house we rented least weekend. They are huge!
@imallers I'm so glad to hear mask are mandatory there they are here but it makes me so mad to see those people without them . Don't understand why they won't . It is warm here today about 85 but the sun is relentless . So hot when not a breeze . Stay in and be careful . I'm doing fine .
@athoub Don't worry about what other people think do they have your problems? You have to do what you can for your body not others.
@fiesty76 Where is the picture of the mockingbirds can't find them ?
