Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Hi,
You can see major fires for miles and miles. from where I live I could see Malibu burning in November 2018, not to mention I had fire burning to my north, east and west. It was just a half block from me, and took down home after home like the domino affect.
My windows were just put in, but even tho my entire home did not burn what did was stressful enough. I hope in 6 to 8 months to be back to my new Normal.
Two things are very important 1– take photos of everything, and 2— have good insurance

@funcountess.. No, I'm not an Angelino. I live in Orange County. I saw all that on the news. My daughter lives in LA Cañada Flintridge, do you know that area? I remember the Rodney King riot when she was in college at USC, we had to go up and get her. It was very scary. The demonstration in London was a peaceful sit down. Target had closed many stores in the LA area. What is the world coming to?

@mayofeb2020 I just heard that 45 Target stores are closing many in Calif. I hope the one I go to isn't one of them

Mayofeb2020,
Are you an Angelino?
I grew up in the area where the looting, and riots were last night. In fact I ordered from a store at the Grove just last month. They had the items I needed to finish my garage, now it’s been torn apart. The custom pillows I have were made at a small shop on Fairfax Avenue it’s owned by an elderly lady and Her daughter I did a lot of needle point, and this small shop would put the backing on the needlepoint to make it a finished product.
Sad to say their business is now gone. The fire that was started by looters took down the building the little business was in.
It looked like Fairfax high school had damage also. The Target store on Pico were hard hit, with looters. That location was where the original Midway hardware store once stood, and just blocks from my late grandparents grocery store was.
Too many memories for me, and I went to bed after 3:00 a.m. with hives.
I’m told the national guard is patrolling Los Angeles. I remember the 1965 riots in the same general area, it went on for days.
I can only hope the store owners carry good insurance, it could take years to reopen if ever.
The two shoe store FLIGHT CLUB and TORI K were ripped apart not to mention the jewelry store lost all the merchandise.
Nordstrom department store I’m sure will be back open soon. Their loss was small, but the RAY BAN eyeglass store was destroyed.
In the future I’m sure there will be more riots, it’s something law enforcement and fire departments expect.

@mayofeb2020 This is all so heartbreaking, sad, and stressful. My husband was watching the news on TV last night and I got to the point where I had to leave the room, it scares and worries me. My concern was made even worse since that was right after talking to my daughter. I pray for her safety. Her husband is a great guy, brilliant but more intellective than physical so not a huge help probably.

On the news, they were showing an athletic shoe store being totally looted, was that one of the ones you mention? Someone pulled up in front of it in a car to steal more shoes and the license plate was very visible so I hope they can arrest and charge the car's owner. Most of the people were pedestrians going in off the street. What is the matter with these people?

@lioness I don't even want to think about what's next.

Hi mayofeb2020,
Orange County, as in Fashion Island, the old Robinson’s dept store, the Koi pond, neiman Marcus, that part of o.c. Off jamboree and pch? Or the Costa Mesa area of o.c. Yes, I know LACanada Flintridge just west of Pasadena. Beautiful old stately homes.
That’s all Tommy Trojan area(USC), I’m a Bruin, old time cross town rivals. But friendly.
1992 or 1994 riots was about Rodney King, now I remember. Rodney is no longer living. I think he passed some years ago.
I remember the 1965 riots I was at UCLA.
I Think there are a lot of people who post on Mayo Clinic from California, maybe we should start a California club?
I know for sure jjjjdduck1 will supply all the candy, as he has a milk chocolate factory in central California.
His specialty is 5 pound chocolate bars.
Anyway, the news said the looters are probably tired, and should not cause trouble Sunday night.Time will tell.
Did your daughters mall area Glendale Galleria open yet? Our malls in Ventura are open, but few people are ready to brave crowds.
Take care,
Funcountess

@mayofeb2020, @contentandwell,@funcountess,@lioness, It is easy to feel down right now, however lets bring this discussion back on track.

I suggest that we return our attention toward the positive support and encouragement for everyone who is dealing with health issues and who depend on our encouragement along the way. When good friends gather, it is easy to become engaged in conversations that veer off topic to the exclusion of others. That is why I want to ask you to return to the intent of our virtual walking group. I have copied this from the original introduction to this discussion on Feb. 19 by @becsbuddy.
"So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect."

I have my podiatrist appointment tomorrow. Yeah! And soon hope to be back up and walking.
Are you planning to walk today? If not. What words of encouragement do you have to offer to to someone who is feelinf "iffy" about getting up and taking the first difficult step?

Hi,
The shoe store is Flight Club the other was ToriK both high end shoe stores. The jewelry store lost all their jewelry. What is wrong with the people? One word OPPORTUNIST. They see the opportunity, and just jump right in. None of this was about George Floyd.
He was just the excuse.
I hope the shop keepers had good insurance.
Your daughter and family I’m sure are fine, looters want the retail areas. Fires are seen for many miles.
Did you talk to her today?
Tell her to stay in with windows closed. Not good to breathe in the smokey air.
Take care,
Funcountess

Thank you @rosemarya . Well said. We can’t solve the problems of the world but we can help our little spot. We need to stay focused and upbeat and not let ourselves become part of the problem!
Hit the wrong button! I decided yesterday that I just can’t keep up with you spry, young things, so I’m going to change! Will still go walking, but not get upset when I can’t go for miles, or ride my bike, or everything else. I have to stay well so I can go to Washington DC when things open up again. Haven’t seen my mom since Christmas.
SO, happy walking, everyone!
And, I’m nominating @lioness to post our next motivation!

@rosemarya, oops, sorry. Yes I did walk this morning. My plan is 2 laps around my condo complex in the morning and 1lap in the afternoon, sometimes when my back and legs don't hurt too much, I'll walk more. Today it took all of my energy to finish my walk, but I did it. Weather has been great so it helps.

Wow! You don't say if you're in Phoenix or Death Valley. A relative lives in Tucson and told me that this past Monday it was already 100 degrees. But it's a dry heat, right? Makes quite a difference. We are having a generally "soupy" day. Be careful out there.

@hopeful33250
Hi
I was in Phoenix all summer one time am I couldn’t get into the swimming pool fast enough.
I live in the central valley of California about 90 miles west of San Francisco.
No humidity here we’re at least done that’s noticeable only on very very few days during the year. And then it’s not much at all I don’t know how people that live in that humid climate stand it. When I went to the worlds fair in New Orleans I didn’t think I was going to make it.
Humidity ranks right up there with cooking
Hope you have a few dehumidifiers.
Jake
