Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@becsbuddy That is a beautiful picture. Very different from hawaii and just as lovely. I should learn how to post photos on here.
@jakedduck1 In answer to your response about feeling any benefits from the walking and also to Becky. I am definitely feeling improvements. I mostly feel the change downward when I don't exercise and then when I do exercise I feel what I look at as normal. My body feels more in alignment from the stretches too. So I would say Leonard that you might be feeling a lot worse if you did none of your exercise even if it isn't that much. Any movement is better than no movement. And what do they say, 'Use it or lose it'? Of course that can refer to a lot of things!

@imallears I would go for that. It's my sort of food. I had octopus the first time when I was in Spain around 1960. That and the Paella were delicious. Woops, this isn't walking again. But on thinking more about that, if we talked about nothing but walking there wouldn't be much camaraderie. We just need a sensible balance. Everyone on this walking site has got to know each other socially from a distance and I think that's good.

@pollyanne... Back from my walk. Looks like rain is on the horizon so I'd better get going. Octopus is one of my favorite food... My mom used to cook it for me. The tentacles were kind of scary when you were children but no more. I like them in sushi too.

Well, maybe no walk for me today - 2.5" of rain since yesterday afternoon and still falling - and the temp as well. This is my first day off in over 2 weeks, so I don't feel too bad. Used my walking time to put a big pot of ham, tomato and lentil soup on to cook - smells really good in here.
But I'm feeling very accomplished - finished a "big boy" quilt top of my own design for my 4 yo grandson's new bed. All from my stash - no I need to track down a back and the batting. I will post a pic when it's ready.

@sueinmn I love quilts. I splurged and bought a handmade one with the yoyo type of pattern. I looked at it for months and then someone else bought it and I was crushed. That person decided it didn't fit well in her room and brought it back so I grabbed it. I knew when I was so crushed that I had to have despite the price. My daughter loves it too so it will be hers eventually.

@mayofeb I remember the first time I had octopus I had trouble swallowing those tentacles. I do like it when they make the little rings. What is that called? My memory keeps letting me down. They have them a lot in Spain too. Hey, how about walking around Spain. Or has anyone thought about doing the pilgrims's walk to St James's tomb ? Again the name escapes me. I am going to look it up and will post it. I would love to do that for real. You stay in Bed and Breakfast places along the way.

Oh that is stunning scenery. Wish I could be there walking with you. I often see deer on my walk but can't
get my phone out fast enough to take a picture. Some wild turkeys around and once I saw a bobcat right in my subdivision. I thought someone had a big dog.

Whoa, bobcat, now I would want that one on a different path. I saw a opossum in my backyard the other morning, I would prefer that to a bobcat for sure.

Yes a bob cat is similar to a Lynx isn't it. Very dangerous animals. They have them on Vancouver Island where my daughter lives.

I found which trail I was thinking of for walking in Spain. It is called in English, The Way of St James and the town with the cathedral and the shrine is Santiago de Compestela, in Spain. The trail can be joined at various points depending how long you want it to be. I know people who did this at age 80. You just do shorter segments in each day. I would love to do this. It has been in existence since medieval times.

You have done well in the last two weeks and deserve that scrumptious soup. I did muster up enough energy to get out when I thought it had stopped raining. On my return, I was pretty 'damp' to say the least. I would have loved a bowl of your soup about then.
