Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@migizii If you find any particularly good videos on YouTube please share them so on inclement days we will have some exercises to do.

@mayofeb2020 I’m tipping the shoppers well too, they are out there risking their health. I don’t know what we would do without them.

I don’t know if I’d say any particular ones were outstanding but I liked the low impact cardio walking programs for people in their 50’s, along with tai chi for movement.

Gee, did anyone go walking today?? I made myself get out because it’s sunny and more snow is expected tomorrow. I’ll sure be glad when it’s warm everyday. I get tired of snow! Happy walking!

Time to go for my walk now to the little store up the road . Need some apple juice hope they have it .

I did!! It is a sunny and warm day so 2 laps for me. I got busy putting away the groceries I got yesterday and making an inventory so I had a late start. It's almost 3 already. Whole Foods is delivering something tomorrow. I had that order sitting for a few weeks and I was surprised to get a delivery time. If course when I went over my order, it was only partially filled. Oh well.

@becsbuddy Sure did get to walk. After weeks of 90f and above temps, we have been enjoying the 60's for 2 days, so walked 40 minutes the past 2 mornings, then settled on the patio with my "crew" and made more masks (nearing 100) and scrub caps.
Also starting to look at a safe time, route and plan to make the trip home. Would like to hit the road in 2 weeks, caravaning with a friend, with the most direct route we can along the interstates. Walking won't be as pleasant up north as here - still snow in our yard!

I was able to do some light weights and cardio when I first got up (half hour) and then this afternoon I, too, took in a dose of 30 temp fresh air with a 30 minute walk. Watching my robins, now, where once again the snow is melting, hoping for a little more warmth this weekend.

@fiesty76 I came across this last night and I think it's pretty good. I love that it's only 5 minutes, so it's easy to do daily, even more than once a day! Balance is so important as we age.

@jk, Thank you so much for this link! These balance exercises are not only doable, they will help give me more confidence. I've become a bit fearful of stepping off of the moving airport walkways and escalators quickly enough and going down stairs makes me more cautious as well.

Had been attending a sr. "chair yoga" class which some of this reminds me of. Really appreciate your help furnishing this link!
