Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@gingerw I will be walking shortly, it is a nice day here today, 59° and sunny. My husband did some yard work so I will be walking alone, which is fine really. I walk faster than he does when I am alone.

@imallears I'm with you -- dark chocolate is my thing. I do also like good white chocolate, if it's real white chocolate, many are not.

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood! Sun's out and no wind! Did not even need a jacket. 5000 steps so far. Will go again after my phone appointment with my doctor and hopefully grocery delivery.

@contentandwell thanks for the video link for the indoor 15-minute walking option. I used it today because it's raining and blowing a gale. This was a great substitute. https://youtu.be/CcrG-euQyfg I added some yoga afterrwards for an additional 10 minutes of gentle stretching.

Who else is walking today?

You can do it!! Giving ourselves a little push makes us stronger emotionally as well.

@jude07, Whee Ha! I did it! Welllll, I made it to the end of our dble long block but the wind whipped up so fiercely, I turned around and came home instead of making all round. Stilllll, you are right! I do feel stronger with more resolve for making the effort. Thank you.

Yes, it is a Nike slogan and goes way back, however it still fits for today. I just finished my walk outside and feel better with 2.1 miles for the day. Hope others were able to do whatever you can! Keep it up!!

I am going for my walk in a few minutes. It isn't a very nice day here but still warm of course. I would hate to walk in that cold weather. I am not used to it.
I wanted to tell everyone that my husband produced his CBD ointment and I rubbed a lot all around my knee and the area that is hurting and I feel much better. I used it about 3 hours ago and now almost no pain! I'm going to use it tomorrow, in fact I think I need to order some. Has anyone else tried it?

@jude07 I did about a mile and a half at a brisk pace. That's pretty much my limit, it's hard on my knees. I plan to do some more exercise tonight. I am doing core exercises and exercises for balance. Since I have osteoporosis now, balance is more important than ever.

@mayofeb2020 When I went out it was 58° here, I just needed a vest.

@migizii It is a fairly decent workout and not too long. I can exercise for an hour in the gym but I get tired of it when I am watching videos. There are others by a Jenny McClendon that are good too, and fit my requirements of not being too long. If you google her name a number of them will come up. I think they are really for the 50+ crowd.
I tried doing some that my health club has put out on their website but most of them required getting up and down from the floor fairly quickly and I can't do that. It was disheartening for me, I guess I had delusions of being in better shape than I am but the knees conspired against me again.

@pollyanne I hate walking when it's very chilly, I find it more difficult to breathe, I always have.
I did try CBD cream on my knees and on my hips but it didn't help me at all. I think it's one of those things that helps some people but not others.

@pollyanne Hi there I did go for my walk earlier . I have used the CBD ointment around my knees and hands what a relief it gives you . I have tried over and over again to take the capsule and drops I get sick everytime I do so decided to give it up for now . But I do like the cream

@jude07 Oh, how I can relate to your taking off 2 days from walking!! Some days it is only my stubborn gene that pushes me to do those 3x/s/week walks.

I'm in awe of what you accomplished today. As a result, even though this isn't a "designated day" ...and it is more than chilly at 33 degrees for this naturally cold adverse oldie, I figure if you can get out for a walk at 28 degrees, i can snow woman up for at least an around the block traipse. Will be asking for my reward upon return. Good Going and thanks for the inspiration to try a bonus day!

I just could not “cold up” these past two days to walk outside, so I exercised to YouTube videos......I didn’t want to walk around the house like a hamster, so I did these instead. YouTube is a wealth of ideas and I’m fairly limited in my range of capabilities, so it’s worth checking out if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

I have been thinking about CBD, can you tell me the brand and where you got it from?

This has been a good day. The sun was nice and warm. Had to go home and took off my jacket for my second lap. My phone appointment with the cardiologist went well, no sign of afib. I guess the loop recorder will stay for a while. Next appointment in 6 months. Then my grocery order came, the young man texted me while shopping to confirm any substitutes. I got most of the items. Gave him a generous tip. I felt good so I went for another lap!!
