Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@imallers Wow your a skinny one aren't you haha Watch the wind so it doesn't blow you away
For the last seven years, I would do pool walking two hours every day. But a year ago, I developed an ulcer on my tailbone and it got severely infected with three types of bacteria and I couldn’t go back into the pool. I can’t walk at all except in the pool where the water holds me up when I get in up to my neck. I push myself forward with my arms and my feet follow along. It was a great exercise, but I haven’t been able to go back into the pool because my ulcer has not healed. It’s been over a year now that I have been going to my wound care doctor. Of course, the pool has been closed to everyone because of the virus.
My upper body is in good shape because I spend my life in a wheelchair and that means I have to life my body when I transfer from my chair to the car, the shower, the bathroom, etc. I can life my entire body with my arms.
@darlingtondoll You could probably beat me ar arm wrestling hands down . haha You probably have good lungs too that's good . Hope you have a good sleep tonight someone told me dont let the bedbugs bite ! haha
FL Mary - What part of Florida do you live in? I have a feeling that you live near me, after you gave that weather report. I live near Ocala
It’s one o’clock in the morning and time for me to get back to bed.
@jane, What a bummer that your pool time had to cease because of the ulcer. My nephew also developed slow-to-heal ulcers but his wound treatments eventually healed them Have you created much stronger upper body strength? He was a large man, not overweight, just large boned. He upper body strength became pretty amazing over time after his injury.
I lost a lot of muscle mass after I no longer was able to go into the pool. I worked my entire body with two hours of water walking. But I can still transfer from my wheelchair quite easily. I can lift my entbody with my arms. I use my abdominal muscles a lot too.
Doggone spellcheck. Lift. Not Life
