Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Hi, @ Pollyanne, I remember so fondly my visits to your lovely, enticing islands.

I don't think it is the lack of training in how to wear the masks but rather the severe lack of appropriate gear available. My heart goes out to all of the hospital employees and first responders who are continuing to go to work each day bravely confronting this invisible, so easily spread virus without the appropriate and much overused protective gear. Daily reports from all over the country site that these valiant warriors are having to reuse gear for too many days. They report the dire need for more and yet they risk their lives daily and those of their loved ones to save others. Many of the masks are for one time use and both they and the N1? that are available are being worn throughout the day and are very uncomfortable.

I have been writing to my state and federal legislators begging them to up the quantity and distribution of the desperately needed gear for those risking their lives for the rest of us. They may not respond or heed my requests but it is one tiny effort I and others can make to be heard. Only our top elected leadership can garner the help and production needed to meet this growing and spreading demand. This is not a political situation; this is a life endangering situation for us all.

And yes, the number of cases in my less populated area is growing exponentially day-by-day. And yet there are Americans failing to heed the recommendations of the infectious health experts by continuing to go out and congregate in groups. Do they think they are immune?

I wondered the same as you and it maybe the reason, however they have only had between 3 and 5 Covid 19 patients in the hospital which makes it a bit harder to believe that the staff haven't had any PPE. I do admire and feel very much for the nurses and medical staff in places like New York and it is terrible what is happening. It just seems so awful that the few cases that we have had on the island have been made so much worse by the medical staff. I think they are looking into it. We were nearly at a point of being free from the virus. We have family members and friends who are in the field in the hospitals and we worry about them. It's unbelievable that nobody was prepared for a pandemic. We just have to look forward to better days and thank you for writing to the state and fed legislators although more has to be done by the man at the top. Take care. Jennifer

I have been limiting my protein intake to no more than 35 gr based on my body weight. Most days, I don’t eat that much. I am deficient in my consumption of proteins. I hope that I had enough today, but I’m still going to make that milkshake. I never get hungry and so I don’t eat enough food. I’m not thin, so I haven’t worried about it, but now I realize that I have to consume more food. Ugh! I need more chocolate!🍫

I posted this the other day but I’m posting again. It’s a pretty good video based on walking but less boring. I like the timer up in the corner letting you know how many more seconds to each exercise.
I tried a more typical video class on my health club’s website. There’s some dropping down and going back up to a stand (similar to a burpee) but with my two fake knees I can’t do that quickly enough. I’ve also done a cardio video on the website.

@contentandwell thanks for the video link for the indoor 15-minute walking option. I used it today because it's raining and blowing a gale. This was a great substitute. https://youtu.be/CcrG-euQyfg I added some yoga afterrwards for an additional 10 minutes of gentle stretching.

Who else is walking today?

Walking around a big box store counts as walking especially if you walk fast.
