Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Thanks, I will check out this video. With the snow coming and it being so nice outside I walked nearly four miles today. The low temps all week are not encouraging.

I am grateful that I can walk to relieve some of the stress during this difficult time. I tried my first time at Zumba on Utube, beyond me for sure. I could hear my floor laughing histerically. LOL

@jude07. Whenever you are following an exercise routine of any type, you need to modify to do it at your own pace. All of the instructors at my health club are constantly reminding the participants of that. I used to do Zumba but I could not jump. I may give it a try again but since then I’ve had two knee replacements so my knees tend to be uncooperative.

I posted this the other day but I’m posting again. It’s a pretty good video based on walking but less boring. I like the timer up in the corner letting you know how many more seconds to each exercise.
I tried a more typical video class on my health club’s website. There’s some dropping down and going back up to a stand (similar to a burpee) but with my two fake knees I can’t do that quickly enough. I’ve also done a cardio video on the website.

Jude, I'm with you on walking as a great stress reliever. Your "hysterically laughing floor" brought a big smile. We can't have too many of those but I'm pretty sure, kitty Precious would be mortified if I even attempted Zumba so good for you!

Lioness, I will check out the video but my objective is adding weight not losing. However, the timer you mentioned is one of my favorite indoor tools. When procrastinating about starting some drear task, I set the timer for a "doable, reasonable amount of time" and then Stop when it goes off. Immediate rewards follow!!! Smiles

Yesterday was beautiful. After yard time, I went for my Sat. neighborhood walk later in the afternoon than usual. Sunny, warm, still and yet I only saw two individuals working in their garages during an hour plus walk. No children in their yards playing and not one other walker seen. It was a bizarre experience because of how "loud" the silence of the neighborhood was.

Yesterday was such a beautiful day and today? at least 10 degrees colder and damper. Video chat with my kids later and hopefully I can get a walk in after that.

@lioness Happy Easter! I think our calendar turned back to January! It’s cold and we have at least 6” of snow! No one is outside exercising! Me included. I think I’ll try a YouTube video later.
Today starts week #7. I’ll have to find some motivation for us

@becksbuddy & @lioness & @contentandwell. Happy Easter to you and to everyone on this walking site. It's a beautiful day in Maui, not too hot at a high of 79 today. We have a curfew this weekend from 11 pm to 5 am. I guess they want to make sure there is no late night partying. I don't think I can walk today because I have done something to my leg and I made it worse yesterday. Not sure what happened but it is at the back of my knee and going into my calf. I am missing my couple of therapists that I go to. They are a married couple and she is a chiropractor that does not snap and crack me and they both practice Active Release Technique therapy. They are really great and often avoid surgery in many of their patients. It will be so good when we can go to the hairdresser again and also my nails are so long now and I can't cut them because they had the powder polish, so the nails are too thick for my nail scissors. It's a good thing we have our walking because it definitely is a relaxing past time where you can let go of everything. And I am worried about my older daughter because she has had to keep working and has been in direct contact with a virus case the day before he was tested positive. Neither of them were wearing a mask. What are the chances do you think? Enjoy your Easter walks. Jennifer
