Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Good evening,
” Looks like it's going to be another warm day” Just curious what you call warm?

Anything over 70 is warm to me. I can't wait till it gets to upper 70s and lower 80s, that's the ideal temperature for me.

Anything over 80 degrees is warm for me here in Florida. But it depends on the humidity too. That’s why I start my walk before 8 am...before the humidity starts to climb.
I’d rather walk in 50 degree temperatures. In our humid summer months, I’ll be out the door by 7:15 , 7:30. If my entire family didn’t live here I would be out of this state ASAP. But I have to say, the winters are great and when the humidity is lower like it will be tomorrow, then it’s a great place to live and walk and run (so many runners lately... probably haven’t exercised in 10 years)

Yes, but you were use to subzero weather in PA.
I am happy if the weather temperature stays below 90. But if it goes to 110 or whatever if I am out by 6-7 AM and stay out all day I become acclimated to whatever temperature it climbs to. But if I step out to get the mail or whatever at 2 or 3 pm I'd want back in the air-conditioned house lickety-split. If I were walking like @imallears at 50° I’d probably come home with icicles hanging all over me.

Men get restless quicker then women. Your husband has a good attitude thinking he is still young.
But he needs to remember pneumonia is a serious disease, and can leave scar tissue on the lungs.
Maybe he can drive you to the market, you go in the market, and have him stay in the car. Better safe then sorry.
My late husband had multiple cases of pneumonia,so I understand your concern for his wellbeing.
Take care

Thanks for your concern. I'm afraid I have tried all that and he will not go for it. I wish he would. He is being protective!

@lionessI think you are great. You try so hard and you are always positive and determined with your exercise and with everything else too. There's no putting you down girl.

Hey, everyone, we seem to have several discussions going on here and all are great! But I would like to suggest that the discussion on gardens move to the Just Want to Talk site: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/other. As the weather slowly gets better, gardening for our mental health will be so necessary.

The discussions about masks and social distancing for COVID-19 should move to the COVID-19 group
https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/covid-19/
We’re all talking about so many things, it can be hard to find something when we’re looking! So let’s talk about walking and exercise here!

I guess we need our moderator. We do have a good group here and everyone gets on so well that it is inevitable that we get off track right now. But you are right, we are supposed to be a walking group. I will post on the other sites if I need to and meantime I shall carry on walking, stretching and weight lifting. I am used to doing all these things on a regular basis but had not been walking for quite a while due to a lot of travel. I am now back to my routine and everyone on here seems to be doing so well. I will post on here from time to time and I will keep my eye on what is going on. Meantime, good luck to everyone and take care during these terrible times. Keep on truckin as they say. Thanks for the friendship and support. Aloha Jennifer/aka Pollyanne [which is actually my younger daughter's name]
