Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

“Walking gets the feet moving, the blood moving, the mind moving. And movement is life”
So does walking from candy dish to candy dish or to get some cookies and the reward is much more pleasant.
Your soup sounds good but I suppose it has to be cooked. Oh well, it was a nice thought while it lasted.

Jake,
Walking from candy dish to candy dish is as much exercise as lifting the candy from the dish to your mouth... Weight lifting depending on how heavy the candy is.!

I found this 3 ingredients soup online. Super easy, 2 cans of black beans drained, one can of diced tomato, one cup of broth or water. (I used a little more water), 1/4 teaspoon crushed red peppers, cooked 15 to 20 minutes. I added some cumin too. I put the soup in my Vitamix blender and it came out nice and smooth. A stick blender would work too. Season to taste.. I crumble some totilla chips on top.

Hello mayofeb2020 thanks for the recipe. I told my husband about the soup and he looked up a recipe online but it was a lot more complicated. We are going to try your recipe. Hubby can make it while I walk haha. (He walks early before I am up) And Jake, I think you need to find a little more meaning to life. Cookies! Indeed!
@lioness thanks for your thoughts yesterday. I am glad to say I feel fine today and just did my walk. I think it might have been an allergy to the trees that are in bloom. I also think I benefited from a day's rest because I have much more energy today. Anyone else who is feeling like it's a bit more of an effort, just take the day off. I think you will benefit too.
I like the sound of the Sand Dune Stepper and I shall tell a few other people about it. It sounds a good thing for anyone who can't get out either because of the cold or the heat. I might like it in the summer and as you say it would be good for osteoporosis which I also have.

Bean and ham soup sounds great! Split peas and ham is one of my favorites. I love soup in cold and wet weather. I live alone. I'm the cook once, eat twice (trice sometimes) my daughter shared a Tuscan sausage, bean and kale soup that I make in the slow cooker. Super nutritious and warming. I modify recipes depending on what I have or have not.

Both soups sound good. Will probably make both. I like soup in any weather and they are nutritious.

I did my walking today, I walked 15 minutes, mailed a letter. I walked to the grocery , purchased avocado, hamburger , soda, onion for dinner salad and fixings, then walked 15 minutes back. My app recorded like this, I'm at 60% for today...where else should I walk?

I think someone is a show-off!
I went to the store today but I certainly didn't walk. Empty shelves all over the store. It is absolute insanity. I can't believe how selfish and thoughtless people are. All this fear and panic, WHY?
