Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

I am in for sure, I have been waiting until the temperature is about as high as it will get and then walking outside. A high of 30 today, however a brisk walk will still feel good. Thanks for starting this.

Great ceasers ghost Jude, where do you live on top of a tall mountain somewhere. if I went out walking in 30° weather I swear I would freeze solid in mid-stride. I am in California where the expected high is only going to hit a frigid high of 65 today.

@jude07, Welcome to Connect. You have inspired me because I just looked out the window and I actually see some blue sky and the windy and rain have calmed. I'm going for a walk. Thank you,

I live in Southern California, it's been raining and looks like it's going to least for the rest of the week. I don't like the cold and the dampness. Unfortunately my home never gets any sun. It's even worse now that I am staying home 24/7. If weather permits, I still go out to walk despite hip and leg pain. Don't see too many people walking anymore, usually when I see people, I move a little farther away, and we wave and nod with a smile. We're all thinking the same thing... Social distancing.

Hi @jakedduck1 ! California is in the news here in the cold weather, are you close to where that navy hospital ship is docked? I didnt know that Navy ship existed! Maybe our Mayo docs will buy one of those empty Carnival Cruise ships the president was talking about, we could sign up for a Mayo cruise! I'm using my creativity here stuck on the couch social distancing.....

Ok, Wind and cold is not a good combo Jude, guess I will continue to what is possible while at Mayo. Haven't heard any so guess my treatment will continue. Just wonder if I will ever get home.

I’m so glad you all are still walking even with the rain and snow! Course, walking along a beach is perfect. I’m waiting for it to warm up a little. 21 degrees is just too cold for me.
We have about 20 people who are missing and that’s just too many to list. Hope they’re out there somewhere. We’d love to hear from you!
Keep walking, exercising, or whatever you do to stay healthy! The public health experts have said walking and getting outside is great as long as you maintain social distancing. Let’s go!

@lioness Good for you. I heard from a friend in NY state and she told me that she walked 5 miles around her house today. Well she has a pretty big house but still that's a lot of walking in circles. She has an Apple watch to measure the distance. Meanwhile I took a different route this afternoon for my walk down to the beach because I was interested to see what the situation was down there. It was nothing like it normally is and people on the sand were spread out quite well but not so when they went in the water. I think they should close the beaches for a while. I walked along the trails and saw very few people and took a wide birth when I came across any.
Our Mayor in Maui has just made it law that all grocery stores have to provide a safe window for seniors to shop. I just have to check when those times are. Probably very early. I am not a morning person!

@pollyanne me neither but I do order online early for my groceries .

I am sure your hip and leg pain is real and quit miserable, however even without the sun it's refreshing to go whatever distance you can.
Take care to go slow.
