Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@Erinmfs Whenever I do an outdoor walk my Apple watch has the right start time and stop time, but for some reason only says I walked far fewer minutes than I did. Yesterday I walked for 21 minutes but it said only 7 minutes of exercise! I would have walked further but it was cold here and my fingers were like ice cubes despite wearing gloves, plus that was all my husband could handle.

@mayofeb2020 One local chain of supermarkets has instituted senior hours -- 6:00 A.M. - 7:30 A.M. Pretty early but not a bad idea. I was in the store early this morning because I tend to wake up early and not be able to get back to sleep. I have my alarm set to 7:00 to take my medications, which I take at least an hour before breakfast. If I wake up at 6:00 I don't get back to sleep because I know my alarm will be going off fairly soon. I have the Apple watch and it vibrates to wake me up, which is great because with it I don't need to disturb my husband.

One of the stores is having a senior shopping hour from 7 to 8 starting tomorrow, but I'm going to wait a while since I expect the first few days would be a busy time. This is one step to help us folks of "a certain age".

My son wanted to get me an Apple watch, but since I am technology challenged, and I'm so used to my android phone I will probably decline. I know Apple watch has alot of great features.

The photo is of my Standard Poodle Service Dog, "Beau Geste". Since he requires daily walks and we live on twenty acres out in the country we are able now to get outside and get some fresh air. We have come to love Beau so much we got a black Standard Poodle "Skye" for my husband to train as his Service Dog. (We've trained dogs for thirty years, obedience, conformation and Search and Rescue). When I was told I'd benefit from having a service dog after my diagnosis at Mayo we did a lot of research and decided on a standard poodle puppy after a rescue dog turned into a nightmare experience. Walking/moving/gentle Yoga are all so very helpful for the mind as well as the body. I applaud your inviting us all to join you!

@lioness I was pretty much expecting to rely on my recumbent bike for exercise now that my health club has closed until things are better, but I am finding that it really bothers my hip bursitis. I am doing other exercises prescribed by my physical therapist and I do plan on trying some of the ones posted here. I enjoyed the bike because I would watch TV at the same time. Generally our TV is on what my husband likes to watch. We will often watch one show an evening that we have recorded but many things that I record he will not watch.

@Erinmfs A lot of the reason I bought it was for the alarm! I had a Misfit tracker before (not to be confused with Fitbit) that finally pretty much died. It was a heck of a lot less expensive than the Apple but I actually think it was a better tracker. The model I had was their original and no longer made.
My son decided the Apple did not track things as well as he would like so he bought a Garmin for about twice the cost! Oh, to be young and have that kind of money to spare! It is supposed to be a superior tracker though, for serious fitness types. My audiologist has one too, she runs marathons.

@mayofeb2020 The Apple watch is incredibly user friendly. I was amazed at how intuitive it is.

@contentandwell Whatever works for you if your body growls at the bike limit your time on it do other exercises that's why I like our chair it's a full body workout but your not sore afterwards it's 45 minutes long your tired and work up a sweat . Have to get to it now time is flying but I was busy with mail problems this morning

I didn't know that recumbent bike is not good for hip bursitis. I was going to get one. My bursitis really bothered me. My ortho doctor gave me a shot of something but it didn't help. Now I have to think of something else.

@contentandwell I’m not positive about this, but I think the exercise minutes recorded may be tied to heart rate. I’ve noticed the same thing with my Apple Watch. If I take a leisurely walk, it doesn’t record the minutes either. If it’s a brisk walk, it records them. Just assuming I have to walk quickly enough to get my heart rate up. If anyone knows if this is how it works, I would like to know. Thanks

I wonder how many of us suffer from the same problem with our husbands. We have a TV in the bedroom and sometimes I go in there and watch something else.
As for the cycling hurting your hip. I have the same problem and so it's not for me. Also it bothers my knees. You could try exercising on the spot. My ex husband used to do that in the days when we lived in Quebec and we couldn't go outside. He used to jog on the spot.
