Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19, 2020

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@becsbuddy you can only what you can do, don’t beat yourself up over it.
I am beginning to wonder if I should continue going to my health club. I think I will, armed with antiseptic hand wipes. The gym has paper towels all over with spray bottles of sanitizer to wipe down the equipment you used when you are done with each machine but I plan to start wiping it down before I use it too. There are also Purell dispensers in numerous locations. I am not generally very close to other people. Now I will make sure that I am not.

I have the same concerns. I think I will take my own sanitizing wipes to use. I’m not sure what the bottles the gym provides are filled with. I think for me not going would be a bigger health risk than going but taking precautions.

JK. I started on prednisone in Jan. of 2016 for an attack on my kidney. I started on 80mg for a long time then had no results so that they gave me mycofenolate along with the prednisone.l maintained this for a year and stopped the mycofenolate because the kidneys responded well to the treatment and during that year they began to titrations the prednisone and in July of 2017 i finally stopped it. But by this time the myopathy was well on is way with my left side most badly affected, my left arm , hand and the leg below the knee. Both feet feels like I am walking on bubble wrap and on Jan.2019 I started to get hip problems. I had an mri in Jan. of this year and it revealed that both hips were beginning to shrivel and I guess dry rot is in process. The worst culprit in this whole affair was the prednisone. Large doses over long time. Only one in a million suffer this hip problem and I have it in both, why couldn’t that be on the lotto

@beachbum80 I am on 5mg a day as part of my immunotherapy. I suspect I will never be off of it because my blood counts are low. That's a shame that you have such a terrible effect on it. I guess they must have really felt you needed it. I wish for your sake that they could have eliminated it sooner.

@patriciao I was just looking on Amazon for disinfecting wipes because the stores are all out of them. I have a few but not nearly enough if I plan to continue to go to the health club. The name brands are out of stock on Amazon too but there is a brand that is available to wipe down surfaces - it says "alcohol-free disinfectant wipes".
I agree with the need to go to stay healthy, I really do need to continue to go to help with my osteoporosis and everything else. As you age it is more and more important to keep your strength. It really is a dilemma though. I am confident that what they have in the gym is a good disinfectant but it will be easier to have my own if I plan to wipe down the equipment before for my own benefit and after as the gym requests. Unfortunately not everyone does wipe the equipment down after using it. Fortunately my health club is a very nice and clean one. There are always people around cleaning everything, but they can't follow members around and clean equipment after each person uses it.

You’re absolutely right. My club always has staff out cleaning too, but they can’t be everywhere at once. I prefer to wipe machines down before and after use and I always go wash my hands thoroughly with soap and water when I’m done exercising. Have a good 2nd week.

@contentandwell You know, I’ll bet you could make some wipes! Put a bunch of folder paper towels or wash cloths in a plastic tub and pour in a small amount of kitchen/bathroom cleaner . Just to make things damp. Worth a try! Just scrub your hands real well after using

Hi, all
Tomorrow starts week #2! 5 min warm up, 7 min exercise, and 5 min cool down. Thought for the week: “ All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” Friedrich Nietzsche

@becsbuddy That's a good idea, but I think you would need to add something else to it to make it disinfecting.
This is really getting worrisome. We were supposed to have a late lunch tomorrow with my sister and her husband and my brother and his wife but he has canceled, he's concerned about dining out. The restaurant we meet at is in a hotel that is primarily a business person's hotel so it's always very empty on Sunday afternoon -- we at times have been the only diners -- but he is still concerned. He does not have a compromised immune system as I do, but his health is not good due to his heart.

This virus thing is really getting everyone worried. My friend who goes to the gym everyday said it is not as crowded as before. Another friend belongs to a movie club and a book club and she is concerned about going to the movies. She said her friend was on a cruise to Mexico and she was unable to contact her.... My daughter and my son in law who owns houses in other state and in England are not traveling like they used to. They are not going to restaurants either and urge me not to go out too much. I'm still doing my am and pm walk, otherwise I think I will be stir crazy.
