Asthma like symptoms after engine fume inhalation

Posted by acid2come @acid2come, Jan 13, 2020

Hello everyone, I can’t get any help or information! I’ve been to primary doc, pulmonologist, ERS, and Gastroenterologist..So I’m sorry in advance for the long story..but this is how it’s went so far.. in August I helped my husband work on a high performance motor in our shop.. It was over heating so it was a lot of starting it and letting it run until over heating (work on it) then start it up again and let it run until it over heated again.. thus went on for about 7-8 hrs.. shop doors were open..it was about 100 degrees we also had fans going..but the fumes were bad..I started coughing that night and felt bad the next week. Thought it was the flu...the nx wkend it was still over heating so we wrapped the headers with fiberglass. I still didn't fell good.. but I helped anyway.. it was a 7-8 hr job also..my cough got worse, had muscle fatigue..but now I cldnt talk or drink anything with out coughing..I couldn’t Stand the taste of soft drinks it burned my mouth..or if it was cold it made me cough..with coughing come no air.. I cld breath in but couldn’t breathe out... my oxygen level is good so I get no help from doctors..had s lung function test it showed restricted air way..plus my GURD started back up.. had a EGD doc said from throat down to stomach is not bleeding but very red and inflamed..I’ve had a Nissan fundo surgery about 10yrs ago wasn’t hvin any trouble with acid.. until all of this...never had any breathing trouble..until all of this.. I hv a nebulizer but it doesn’t seem to help..
Any suggestions or help I would appreciate it very much..

@acid2come- Good morning. I agree with John too. Write down your story as simply as possible, not leaving out any important facts. Here is a site to help with other questions:

I read your post from last night and I hope that you are a bit more hopeful this AM.
Since this has happened has your husband purchased special hazmat masks for his work?

It’s a hobby, and we both love it..yes we did get masks.. but I stay out of the shop, it’s a big trigger for me... I did have a list.. kept it plan and to the point...the doctor gave me a plastic bag.. said I was hyperventilating... I never had asthma or shortness of air...I just know that I can’t walk across the room or have a conversation without out totally being breathless and coughing my head off..BUT oxygen level is good so they don’t take me serious..
Does anyone have a opinion about having lungs flushed??

@acid2come

Hello, I’m feeling down tonight, been having a very hard time breathing.. so I went to OU medical Center yesterday.. we got there about 1:30.. my BP was 167/125 and I was still having a very hard time breathing.. it was 6:30 before I finally got a breathing treatment and the guy from respiratory said he would give it about 30 minutes and we would do another treatment.. but it was shift change he never showed up again..finally the doctor can me in and said I have asthma.. he wrote a script for pro air and steroids..never addressed my BP and not much concern for my breathing...sent us home.. (I can’t stop coughing) and that makes my air way get tighter...making it harder to breathe..
Then today I got results from blood work I had last week..I tested positive for autoimmune disorder.. primary doctor is sending me to McBride bone and joint in Oklahoma City..I’ve done a little research on it.. I feel at a loss wright now... I already had knee replacement both shoulders replaced.. now I don’t know if the autoimmune disorder is affecting my breathing.. My question is is there a medication that will help me??
Is it the autoimmune disorder causing my asthma or asthma symptoms??
Where do I go pulmonologist??
How do I stop this itching in my throat that makes me cough??
Anyone any answers or suggestions??

Good morning @acid2come . It sounds like you did what we all suggested but didn’t really get any help. So, now I would suggest seeing a pulmonologist, a lung specialist. You could call OU Med Center (or look up online) and ask for their department of respiratory diseases. Explain what’s going on and that you need an appointment. Keep trying and advocate for yourself! Or, if you’re in a reasonably size town, you might find a pulmonologist who is closer. Will you let us know what happens? We care

Hello, yes I’ve seen a ent he suggested a lung function test..it showed mild asthma and reactive airway..I went to Gastroenterologist because with the violent coughing acid was coming up, it feels like something is stuck in throat all the regular GERD stuff..I have seen a pulmonologist he suggested I go to consoling because my oxygen level is good..but I’ve made appointment with different pulmonologist... I hv sinus drainage, congested and sore throat.. my breathing is getting shallower I am wheezing chest is very tight. I’ve been up since 3am this Saturday morning using nebulizer.. but it doesn’t seem to help..but I can’t sleep for wheezing and coughing,,so hard to get air, if I take a deep breath it makes me cough...I’m going to go to miner emergency clinic this morning... and if I can hold on I’ve got appointment with pulmonologist Wednesday...plus have allergy test set up.. but can’t get in until March..It’s so hard to breathe..and if it’s asthma I hvnt found the wright medicine..scared and disappointed
But still thankful for any suggestions

@acid2come- Hello again. I bet you're thinking, and for all my efforts in trying to help my husband, this is what I get? co2 inhalation can cause a multitude of problems and it gets so confusing to get rid of them all. I'd be running toe very specialist around in a dizzying frenzy. But my suggestion, if you find yourself lost, is to make a list of what is bothering you the most and go from there. Don't make the list with what you think that you might have, but with what is effecting you the most. It might seem like they all do but try your hardest. Then list all of your symptoms per problem. This might help you feel more in control and help reduce your anxiety. I am very glad that you won't put up with lousy doctors. Have any of your doctors suggest a prednisone shot of some sort. It sounds as if your lungs are very very irritated. A nebulizer is great. I even own one for my lung cancer. It does take a long long time for lungs to repair themselves.
What did they do for you or advise you to do?
Did you go to the clinic?
