Not yet diagnosed/Core needle biopsy BIRADS 4 scheduled

Posted by annac3 @annac3, Dec 4, 2019

“Your exam shows findings that may be due to breast cancer.” This was the box checked on my visit summary from regional breast cancer center last week. I’m now scheduled for US guided core needle biopsy on 12/9/19.

The very kind radiologist, pretty and very pregnant, pulled the mass image up on screen and explained that the dark spot is covered in a bit of a haze, and is not easily outlined. She also explained that this is a mammogram finding and is not the palpable lump I found about 3 months ago. That is likely a benign cyst.

Diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound reports rate this an overall BIRADS 4, indistinct oval hypoechoic mass with posterior shadowing and an echogenic rim, measuring .6 x .4 x .4 cm. I have recently been diagnosed with enlargement of inguinal lymph nodes as well. That was an incidental finding on venous Doppler US done for mild venous reflux in bilateral lower extremities.

Does anyone have experience with distant lymph node issue prior to BC diagnosis? My primary doc doesn’t think it’s related. I suppose it may be due to chronic hemorrhoids and history of colon polyps. I have return appointment with my gastroenterologist in March.

Hi @annac3, my apologies for the delayed response to your message. Did you have the ultrasound today? How are you doing?

US guided, vacuum-assisted core needle biopsy with 9 passes (# of samples taken). Pathology report in approximately 48 hours. Ice packs and Tylenol tonight but so far no real discomfort.

Biopsy results are Invasive Ductal Carcinoma with tubular features, grade 1. Radiologist says I need to schedule another biopsy on a second smaller mass also in right breast, previously set for 6 month follow up. It was deemed likely benign, but she says now that I have a confirmed malignancy in that breast, it needs a biopsy now. Talking to breast surgeon’s APN about plan today.

My mammo result shows palpable abnormality
Circumscribe 3.3 cm oval mass
Birads 4 low suspicion

Is it chance being cancer?
Is circumscribe mass a bad thing?

You have to wait for a biopsy to really know. When are you having a biopsy?

I looked up circumscribed tumors and apparently radiologists have trouble differentiating cancer from more benign lesions.

Hope you get good news!

Did Mayo give you a Birads 4 and state low suspicion?

I was given a Birads 4 with no further clarification.

Your nodule is circumcised which is a good thing. I’m sure your biopsy results will be excellent. When are you scheduled?

I’m sure your biopsy will be negative. Did the radiologist give you any indication what she suspected when you had your mammogram?

You might find this explanation about Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System or BI-RADS from the American Cancer Society helpful.

Denise, have you and your doctor discussion the results of your biopsy yet?
