Neuropathy & Exercise

How have you received enough physical exercise while dealing with neuropathy?? Do you walk in spite of the condition; tiptoe to get around; particular exercise program, etc.?

@lorirenee1 Never a dull moment in our bodies. The sensations you experience in your feet must be awful.

Outside of steady pain, some of my sensations flare, come and go on different levels and different body parts. Everyday can be unique. Recently I was low on R Alpha Lipoic Acid so I rationed until my next order arrived by reducing my daily intake. I believe sensations flared as a result. It was comforting to feel something actually making positive contributions to my body. What supplements do you take and do you think they help?

Yes, I surprised myself last fall by opening the door to medical marijuana. Desperate times call for desperate measures. It's been a love/hate relationship and one of much experimenting. As of late, due to mismanaged pain, my PCP has allotted 5 hydro per day instead of 4, my neuro upped Lyrica dose and I have needed to rotate THC pills throughout the day to control pain. I find that opiod relief and marijuana relief are different. I benefit differently from each.

I used to hope that with pain relief came the ability to physically accomplish things. I'm a go getter by nature and have always lived by the activity with accomplishment rule. Never could sit still... love to achieve. However, now I have no choice but to accept my new life and find comfort in feeling pain relief without physical accomplishment. Acceptance is and always will be my daily battle.

As soon as the world settles, I hope you get back on track for your dorsal root trial. Think positive.

Good morning @rwinney, cheerio. So, my flare went away...stayed in bed until 2:30. One of those days. Rachel would you please share your experience with different responses from medical cannabis and opioids. I have never used opioids so I only know one side of the coin. If you could mention changes in dosages that would be helpful.

When did your body begin to require a different dosage, ratio mix or increase in dropper amount? I am starting 1:3 CBD/THC today. Just call me a mixologist. I do want to get the percentages right. I am currently using 1:1 CBD/THC, 2 droppers. I didn’t expect that my body would cry out for a higher dose. Is that what you felt? Thank you.

May today find your mind at peace.
Chris

My spinal cord injury is at T 7 so the legs can’t move on their own. I can’t lift them or move them so I am limited as far as exercise is concerned.

@darlingtondoll, A decubitus ulcer would be difficult to heal depending on the stage. The deeper the wound, the more complications can arise. Preventing a sore is not always easy. Assistance may be needed for repositioning a person often throughout the day whether in bed or a chair. @darlingtondoll a physical therapist will make a home assessment and then show you the exercises to do. Always ask the therapist questions. The more knowledge you gain, the better equipped you will be to help yourself. I know it is not easy. If things were easy everyone would do it. That is what separates the fighters or survivors from the rest of the folks. Knowledge is power.

I adjusted the seat on my wheelchair to go forward by four inches which means that I now have a space between the seat and the back. When I sit, my butt (along with my ulcer) is suspended so there’s no pressure on the ulcer. I lie on my side at night and also during the day when I rest.

I see my wound care doctor every Thursday. My ulcer is no longer down to the fatty layer and it is not deep. Every time it gets almost healed, it opens up again. I have a special dressing on it with some Prisma wound dressing directly on the wound. Then I dress it with a special silicone 4”x4” pad. The wound weeps a lot but it is not infected.

I don’t have a fracture. The artery feeding my spinal cord got blocked at T7. It’s like having a heart attack in your spinal cord. It’s officially called a spinal cord stroke. I have advanced cardiovascular disease and I have had two heart attacks, several brain strokes and this paralysis. All caused by the same thing. I had bypass surgery in 2010 and have six new blockages in my heart.

@darlingtondoll Wow so sorry for all you have . You dont need to put up with a fracture then at all. Do you have a cholesterol problem causing your blockages ? My problem is bad genes. My father, grandfather, uncles and six of my male cousins died from heart attacks. I have always been thin, active and I eat a low fat diet. So there’s nothing that I can do to change my medical history. I take a statin, but nothing helps. My sister never exercised a minute of her life, ate a horrible high fat diet, was morbidly obese and did not have any cardiac problems. It just wasn’t fair. She got the good genes.

@darlingtondoll I understand the genes of our parents ,ancestors do have a lot with what we get . I inherited my Mom,s arthritis its all through me from my neck down to my feet . Right now after 2 fractures it in my right hip bad . I was suppose to see a neuro on the 30th March but canceled it so will reschedule when this virus is done Hopefully it will be gone by June if not before My Mom ended up with dementia of the Alzheimer's a type of it so I have some also . But at 78 Im still in control of my self. Its what we are given in this life that we cant do anything about it . Keep going the best you can
