Foot neuropathy: What gives you relief?

Posted by kathrina @kathrina, Nov 5, 2019

It seems if I get enough activity/exercise daily I don’t have pain; if not, am awakened from sleep and must get up (even in the middle of the night). What’s going on & what more should I do to avoid rest-disruption?

@lioness Still no conolidine. You cannot even check your orders on line at their company. Has been almost a month ago that I ordered......will write a big post if I get it. Lori Renee

@klroo0001 Kia, I think that wetness on your legs are sensations from your nerves. Look up paresthesia. It is odd nerve sensations that are not harmful, but very annoying and strange. I will post about the Conolidine if I ever get it. Lori Renee

I second that opinion. My feet and back of calves experience cold wet sensations. My case is neuropathy. Rule out though testing before you get too caught up.

@seniordon09 I face the same dilemma. I know that exercise is a good idea, but I pay for it big time. I only walk when I need to go somewhere. I have to work between winters because our place would deteriorate if I don't stay ahead of the gophers and moles and ground squirrels, and mow the lawns and weed, weed, weed. The orchard and vegetable garden and the many flower beds, along with the house and barn and garage and the rest of our ten acres. I'm extremely grateful to have a good riding mower with a 48" deck. I pull around a small trailer with it - it saves me a lot of steps. Walking just for the fun of it or for the physical benefits is beyond my capability. Each step has to count. Another thing I'm grateful for is a disability placard. Those steps across hard pavement count double on my pain scale.

I have been walking barefoot, and am noticing improvement, especially with balance.

There's no way I'm going to walk barefoot. Even though shoes and socks are somewhat painful depending on what shoes I wear, barefoot is not only painful, it's risky, as well. I had a muscle puncture test and didn't feel the needle go in the top of my foot, though the punctures in 3 other places up my leg were extremely painful. It makes me concerned about stepping on something sharp and not feel it, much like a diabetic faces.

I have tried Gabapentin for a few years and it does not seem to work; so, with Dr instructions I have stopped taking. Anyone else had a good success? For a while when I would be awaken during the night I used lidocaine patches which work ok On YouTube I found a Mayo video and it said to soak the feet in cold water for 10 min and it works well, just a pain. I add some ice. Well any suggestions. Have an appointment for possible use of a Spinal Pain Simulator.

Hi @donaldpickett, welcome. I added your question to this existing discussion:
- Foot neuropathy: What gives you relief? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/foot-neuropathy/

I did this so you can easily connect with other members dealing with foot neuropathy and finding solutions that provide relief, members like @jimhd @user_che214927 (Barry), @artscaping @helennicola and many others.

I can see where soaking in cold water can become a bother to do, but it is a simple and cheap solution if it is working.

Please let us know if your going to go with a spinal cord stimulator. They usually have a 7 or 10 day trial.

I am in a similar situation. I have bad neuropathy in feet and ankles and am taking gabapentin and cymbalta. The cymbalta seems to lessen the pain somewhat but I don't detect any relief from the gabapentin. I am also scheduled for a spinal stimulation procedure in 3 weeks. I am going with the NEVRO System because I have been told it was developed primarily for neuropathy.
Thanks for the tip of soaking feet with cold water. I bought a foot soaker with massaging rolls etc which seems to help but haven't tried cold water yet.
Good luck with your spinal stimulation procedure.

I too have what you do, and worse at night. I have found that when I apply a CBD balm that has menthol or peppermint in it, I get enough relief to fall asleep. I have used several different brands and strengths. Purchased at CBD stores, in grocery stores and companies in n the internet.

Welcome @tomm547, I also have neuropathy but only the numbness which medication doesn't help. Hoping you get some relief with soaking the feet with cold water as suggested by @donaldpickett. Since you mentioned spinal cord simulators I thought you might be interesting in this discussion:

Comparison of Spinal Cord Stimulators from Boston Sci., Nevro: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/comparison-of-spinal-cord-stimulators-from-boston-sci-nevro/

Is your appointment in 3 weeks for a spinal cord simulator trial to see how it goes?
